A living thing is something that is alive: it grows, needs food and water, and can make more of its own kind.
Needs are the things a living thing must have to stay alive, such as food, water, air and a safe place to shelter.
Plants are living things too. They need water, sunlight and soil, and they grow taller and make new leaves and flowers.
Animals need food, water, air and shelter, and people care for pets and garden plants by giving them these things.
Worked example: A bean seed given water and sunlight grew a shoot in a week; a seed kept dry and dark did not, so seeds need water and light.
Common mistake: Thinking a plant is not alive because it does not walk. Plants are alive because they grow, drink water and make seeds.
Common mistake: Thinking a toy dog is alive because it moves. Moving is not enough; a living thing must also grow and need food and water.

How to revise this: care for a pot plant or pet for a week and say aloud each day what it needs and why.
