Biology at Year 10: what the curriculum expects

Year 10 biology covers DNA, genes and inheritance, evolution by natural selection and the evidence for it.

This topic sits inside the Victorian Curriculum for Year 10 science; the questions stay at the easy and at-level tiers so the result is a fair check of the foundations.

Common biology misconceptions tutors see

The distractors in this quiz are built from real misconceptions rather than random wrong numbers, so a specific wrong answer usually points to a specific gap. The ones we see most at Year 10:

None of these is a sign of low ability. Each is a reasonable idea that worked in an earlier year and needs replacing, which is exactly what a good explanation, or a tutor, does.

Practising biology with a Year 10 student

The habits that move biology from shaky to secure at Year 10:

  1. Practise Punnett squares.
  2. Explain natural selection for a specific example.
  3. Compare the nervous and endocrine systems in a table.

Secondary science relies on terminology and on explaining results with the right concept. Make summary notes, draw diagrams from memory and practise written explanations.

How the 10 questions are chosen

Every set on this page is a seeded selection of 10 from the 26 biology questions that pass our quality gate. A different seed gives a different set, and there are many more combinations than any one student will need. The correct answers never appear in the page source; the browser asks our server for them after you press Mark my answers.

A single-topic quiz is more precise than a mixed one: if the score here is low, the gap is in biology, not somewhere in Year 10 science generally. It is still short, though, and it cannot show how a student copes with the stretch and challenge questions that decide a top result. That is what the free Skills Check adds.

Question 1
Biology

A fossil is found in a deeper rock layer than another fossil. What can usually be concluded?

Question 2
Biology

Which of these best explains why offspring of sexual reproduction differ from their parents?

Question 3
Biology

Where is genetic information stored in a cell?

Question 4
Biology

A student examines two species of Darwin's finches. Species A has a short, strong beak and eats hard seeds. Species B has a long, thin beak and eats insects in bark crevices. Both species live on the same island. A biologist says they evolved from a single ancestral finch species. Which combination of processes best explains how two species with such different beaks arose from one ancestor?

Question 5
Biology

A group of the same species living in an area is a…

Question 6
Biology

Which kingdom do mushrooms belong to?

Question 7
Biology

A biologist compares the DNA sequences of a gene found in humans, chimpanzees, dogs, and fish. The results show humans and chimpanzees share 98% of the sequence, humans and dogs share 85%, and humans and fish share 60%. Which conclusion is best supported by this evidence ALONE?

Question 8
Biology

According to natural selection, which individuals are most likely to pass on their genes?

Question 9
Biology

In a stable forest ecosystem, the population of a herbivore stays roughly constant over many years, even though each female produces dozens of offspring per year. Which statement BEST explains why the population remains stable?

Question 10
Biology

A pea plant with genotype Tt is crossed with another Tt plant. What fraction of offspring is expected to show the recessive trait?

How to read a score out of 10

9 or 10 out of 10
The easy and at-level content is secure. The useful question now is how far above the year level the student can go, which a ten-item quiz cannot show. The free Skills Check adds stretch and challenge questions on every topic so you can see the ceiling as well as the floor.
7 or 8 out of 10
Solid, with one or two specific gaps. Look at which topic the incorrect answers came from (the results panel names the weakest topic) and spend a week on that topic before re-testing with a different seed.
5 or 6 out of 10
Some core ideas are shaky. The pattern matters more than the score: two misses in the same topic is a gap; misses scattered across topics usually means reading the question too fast. Either way, the Skills Check will tell you which.
4 or fewer out of 10
Foundations from an earlier year are probably missing, which is common and fixable. Try the quiz one year level down to confirm, then talk to a tutor about a short catch-up plan rather than more of the same practice.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Year 10 biology quiz free?

Yes, completely: no sign-up, no email, no payment, and you can take it as many times as you like. It is one of 3,261 free practice questions RHZ Tutoring publishes across Prep to Year 12. Press New set of questions, or add ?seed= to the address, for a different selection from the same topic.

Why only 10 questions on one topic?

Because a single-topic set is the most precise free check available: if the score is low, the gap is in biology and nowhere else. There are 26 eligible questions on this topic in our Year 10 Science bank, so several different sets are available before any repeat.

Where do the biology questions come from?

From RHZ Tutoring's own Year 10 Science question bank, written to the Victorian Curriculum, checked by a tutor and passed through an automated quality gate. The same bank feeds our tutoring sessions and the free Skills Check. The questions on this page sit at the easy and at-level tiers.

What should I do if the score is low?

Read the explanation for each incorrect answer first; most gaps in biology are one of the misconceptions listed on this page. Then try a second set a few days later. If it is still low, the free Skills Check will show whether the gap is confined to this topic, and a tutor can build a short catch-up plan.

Is there a mixed Year 10 Science quiz?

Yes. The Year 10 Science quiz spreads ten questions across every topic for the year, and the hub lists topic quizzes for every year level from Prep to Year 12.
