What Year 10 students need to know about chemistry

A short orientation first. Year 10 chemistry covers the periodic table and bonding, types of chemical reactions, reaction rates and balancing equations.

Our tutors wrote and checked these questions against the Victorian Curriculum, which is why the wording and the difficulty match what a Year 10 student meets at school.

The usual chemistry errors at Year 10

If your child gets a question wrong here, it is worth checking whether one of these is behind it. They are the chemistry misconceptions RHZ tutors correct most often with Year 10 students:

None of these is a sign of low ability. Each is a reasonable idea that worked in an earlier year and needs replacing, which is exactly what a good explanation, or a tutor, does.

How to practise chemistry at home

Practice works when it is short, regular and specific. For chemistry, our tutors suggest:

  1. Draw particle diagrams for solids, liquids and gases.
  2. Learn the first twenty elements.
  3. Balance equations daily for a week.

For Years 7 to 10, practise the two things tests reward: knowing the terms and applying a concept to a new situation. Past questions are the best resource.

How the 10 questions are chosen

Every set on this page is a seeded selection of 10 from the 30 chemistry questions that pass our quality gate. A different seed gives a different set, and there are many more combinations than any one student will need. The correct answers never appear in the page source; the browser asks our server for them after you press Mark my answers.

Use this page to answer one question well: is chemistry secure at Year 10 level? For the broader picture across every topic and every difficulty tier, the free Skills Check takes about fifteen minutes and produces a report a tutor walks you through.

Question 1
Chemistry

In the reaction CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂, what does the law of conservation of mass predict about the total mass?

Question 2
Chemistry

An atom of sodium has 11 protons and 12 neutrons. What is its mass number?

Question 3
Chemistry

A solution has a pH of 3. What does this tell you about the solution?

Question 4
Chemistry

A row in the periodic table is called a…

Question 5
Chemistry

When magnesium reacts with hydrochloric acid, which gas is produced?

Question 6
Chemistry

The combustion of ethanol (C₂H₅OH, molar mass 46 g/mol) follows the equation: C₂H₅OH + 3O₂ → 2CO₂ + 3H₂O. A student burns 4.6 g of ethanol in excess oxygen and collects the water produced by passing the exhaust gases through a U-tube of anhydrous calcium chloride. What mass of water should be collected? (Molar mass of H₂O = 18 g/mol)

Question 7
Chemistry

What is the correct chemical formula for calcium chloride, formed from Ca²⁺ and Cl⁻ ions?

Question 8
Chemistry

Two experiments test how acid concentration affects reaction rate with magnesium ribbon. Experiment 1 uses 1.0 mol/L HCl at 20 °C. Experiment 2 uses 2.0 mol/L HCl at 30 °C. A student concludes that 'doubling acid concentration doubles the rate.' Which criticism of this conclusion is most valid?

Question 9
Chemistry

A sealed flask contains an equilibrium mixture of nitrogen, hydrogen, and ammonia: N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g). The temperature is held constant and the pressure is suddenly doubled by halving the flask volume. Which statement correctly predicts what happens to the equilibrium position and explains why?

Question 10
Chemistry

Water's chemical formula is…

How to read a score out of 10

9 or 10 out of 10
The easy and at-level content is secure. The useful question now is how far above the year level the student can go, which a ten-item quiz cannot show. The free Skills Check adds stretch and challenge questions on every topic so you can see the ceiling as well as the floor.
7 or 8 out of 10
Solid, with one or two specific gaps. Look at which topic the incorrect answers came from (the results panel names the weakest topic) and spend a week on that topic before re-testing with a different seed.
5 or 6 out of 10
Some core ideas are shaky. The pattern matters more than the score: two misses in the same topic is a gap; misses scattered across topics usually means reading the question too fast. Either way, the Skills Check will tell you which.
4 or fewer out of 10
Foundations from an earlier year are probably missing, which is common and fixable. Try the quiz one year level down to confirm, then talk to a tutor about a short catch-up plan rather than more of the same practice.

What to do with the result

1. Want the full picture?

The free Skills Check takes about 15 minutes, covers every Year 10 topic including stretch and challenge questions, and sends a same-day topic-by-topic report. A tutor calls to walk you through it, no obligation.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Year 10 chemistry quiz free?

Yes, completely: no sign-up, no email, no payment, and you can take it as many times as you like. It is one of 3,261 free practice questions RHZ Tutoring publishes across Prep to Year 12. Press New set of questions, or add ?seed= to the address, for a different selection from the same topic.

Why only 10 questions on one topic?

Because a single-topic set is the most precise free check available: if the score is low, the gap is in chemistry and nowhere else. There are 30 eligible questions on this topic in our Year 10 Science bank, so several different sets are available before any repeat.

Where do the chemistry questions come from?

From RHZ Tutoring's own Year 10 Science question bank, written to the Victorian Curriculum, checked by a tutor and passed through an automated quality gate. The same bank feeds our tutoring sessions and the free Skills Check. The questions on this page sit at the easy and at-level tiers.

What should I do if the score is low?

Read the explanation for each incorrect answer first; most gaps in chemistry are one of the misconceptions listed on this page. Then try a second set a few days later. If it is still low, the free Skills Check will show whether the gap is confined to this topic, and a tutor can build a short catch-up plan.

Is there a mixed Year 10 Science quiz?

Yes. The Year 10 Science quiz spreads ten questions across every topic for the year, and the hub lists topic quizzes for every year level from Prep to Year 12.
