Physics in Year 10 science

Here is the ground the questions cover. Year 10 physics covers motion, Newton's laws, energy conservation and the relationships between force, mass and acceleration.

The items are tagged to the Victorian Curriculum for Year 10, so a score here reflects the standard a Year 10 class is working to, not a generic online level.

Mistakes we see most often in physics

A wrong answer is more useful than a right one if you know why it happened. In sessions with Year 10 students, these are the patterns our tutors see most:

Each of these is fixable in a session or two once it has been named, which is why the results panel below shows the correct answer and an explanation rather than just a score.

Ways to build physics at Year 10

If the quiz shows a gap, more of the same worksheets rarely fixes it. Try these instead:

  1. Draw force diagrams for everyday situations.
  2. Trace energy transformations for a toaster or a bike.
  3. Build circuits and measure current and voltage.

Secondary science relies on terminology and on explaining results with the right concept. Make summary notes, draw diagrams from memory and practise written explanations.

How this physics quiz works

The 10 questions are drawn from 29 eligible items on physics in our Year 10 science bank, all at the easy and at-level tiers. The selection is fixed for this address so a shared link shows the same quiz; press New set of questions or add ?seed= to the address for a different mix. Options are shuffled, no two questions share a stem, and the answer key is fetched from our server only after you submit, so it is not hidden in the page.

Use this page to answer one question well: is physics secure at Year 10 level? For the broader picture across every topic and every difficulty tier, the free Skills Check takes about fifteen minutes and produces a report a tutor walks you through.

Question 1
Physics

A skydiver reaches terminal velocity. What can we say about the forces acting on them?

Question 2
Physics

Light travels fastest through a…

Question 3
Physics

Two students debate Newton's third law. Car A (mass 800 kg) collides with stationary Car B (mass 1600 kg). Student 1 says: 'Car A exerts a larger force on Car B because it is moving.' Student 2 says: 'The forces are equal and opposite, but Car A accelerates more.' Which student is correct, and why?

Question 4
Physics

A student measures the speed of sound by clapping near a large wall and timing the echo. She claps, hears the echo 0.6 seconds later, and the wall is 100 metres away. She calculates the speed of sound as 100 ÷ 0.6 ≈ 167 m/s. What error has she made?

Question 5
Physics

Two forces act on a box: 30 N to the right and 10 N to the left. What is the net force?

Question 6
Physics

White light passing through a prism splits into a spectrum of colours. This happens because different colours of light have different:

Question 7
Physics

A car of mass 1000 kg accelerates uniformly from 10 m/s to 30 m/s over 8 seconds. What net force acts on the car during this time?

Question 8
Physics

Which is a non-contact force?

Question 9
Physics

Which of these is the correct formula for calculating work done?

Question 10
Physics

A 5 kg object experiences a net force of 20 N. What is its acceleration?

How to read a score out of 10

9 or 10 out of 10
The easy and at-level content is secure. The useful question now is how far above the year level the student can go, which a ten-item quiz cannot show. The free Skills Check adds stretch and challenge questions on every topic so you can see the ceiling as well as the floor.
7 or 8 out of 10
Solid, with one or two specific gaps. Look at which topic the incorrect answers came from (the results panel names the weakest topic) and spend a week on that topic before re-testing with a different seed.
5 or 6 out of 10
Some core ideas are shaky. The pattern matters more than the score: two misses in the same topic is a gap; misses scattered across topics usually means reading the question too fast. Either way, the Skills Check will tell you which.
4 or fewer out of 10
Foundations from an earlier year are probably missing, which is common and fixable. Try the quiz one year level down to confirm, then talk to a tutor about a short catch-up plan rather than more of the same practice.

What to do with the result

1. Want the full picture?

The free Skills Check takes about 15 minutes, covers every Year 10 topic including stretch and challenge questions, and sends a same-day topic-by-topic report. A tutor calls to walk you through it, no obligation.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Year 10 physics quiz free?

Yes, completely: no sign-up, no email, no payment, and you can take it as many times as you like. It is one of 3,261 free practice questions RHZ Tutoring publishes across Prep to Year 12. Press New set of questions, or add ?seed= to the address, for a different selection from the same topic.

Why only 10 questions on one topic?

Because a single-topic set is the most precise free check available: if the score is low, the gap is in physics and nowhere else. There are 29 eligible questions on this topic in our Year 10 Science bank, so several different sets are available before any repeat.

Where do the physics questions come from?

From RHZ Tutoring's own Year 10 Science question bank, written to the Victorian Curriculum, checked by a tutor and passed through an automated quality gate. The same bank feeds our tutoring sessions and the free Skills Check. The questions on this page sit at the easy and at-level tiers.

What should I do if the score is low?

Read the explanation for each incorrect answer first; most gaps in physics are one of the misconceptions listed on this page. Then try a second set a few days later. If it is still low, the free Skills Check will show whether the gap is confined to this topic, and a tutor can build a short catch-up plan.

Is there a mixed Year 10 Science quiz?

Yes. The Year 10 Science quiz spreads ten questions across every topic for the year, and the hub lists topic quizzes for every year level from Prep to Year 12.
