Year 10 Scientific inquiry notes: the key ideas

A one-page summary of scientific inquiry at Year 10 level, written by RHZ tutors to the Victorian Curriculum. Read it before the quiz, or print it for revision.

Uncertainty is the range within which the true value probably lies, usually half the smallest scale division for one reading.
Percentage uncertainty = absolute uncertainty ÷ measurement × 100, so it is larger for small measurements on the same instrument.
Systematic error is removed by calibrating equipment or changing method; random error is reduced by repeating and averaging.
Evaluate a claim by asking who made it, what evidence supports it, whether the sample was representative and whether it was peer reviewed.
Correlation between two variables does not prove causation, because a third factor may drive both.
Worked example: A ruler with 1 mm divisions gives 25.0 mm ± 0.5 mm, so percentage uncertainty is 0.5 ÷ 25 × 100 = 2 percent.
Common mistake: Using error to mean a mistake. Error is the unavoidable difference between a measurement and the true value, not carelessness.
Common mistake: Concluding more than the data supports, such as claiming a fertiliser works for all plants after testing one species.
