What Year 11 students need to know about exam technique

A short orientation first. In Year 11 exam technique for Methods is about learning the two-exam structure early: technology-free working, reading questions carefully, showing method and managing time on a SAC.

The usual exam technique errors at Year 11

If your child gets a question wrong here, it is worth checking whether one of these is behind it. They are the exam technique misconceptions RHZ tutors correct most often with Year 11 students:

• Method marks are lost because working is not shown.
• Time runs out on the extended-response section.
• Exact answers are rounded.

None of these is a sign of low ability. Each is a reasonable idea that worked in an earlier year and needs replacing, which is exactly what a good explanation, or a tutor, does.

How to practise exam technique at home

Practice works when it is short, regular and specific. For exam technique, our tutors suggest:

1. Write a personal formula sheet for Exam 1.
2. Do timed past papers from Term 2.
3. Mark against the examiners' report and note the common errors.

For VCE maths, fluency in the foundations frees up working memory for the extended questions. Do a short mixed set daily and a timed paper each fortnight.

The response is incomplete because the student has not stated which quadrant 7π/6 lies in before writing the answer. The response is complete and would earn full marks because the exact value is correctly obtained with clear reasoning shown. The response would lose a mark because the student must convert to degrees before applying the identity. The response would lose a mark because the student should verify the answer using a calculator.

Question 8

A student solves a quadratic and writes x = −3 or x = 5 as the answer to 'Find the values of x for which f(x) = 0, given f(x) = x² − 2x − 15.' The question is worth 2 marks. Which response best earns full marks?

Question 9

A 3-mark Methods question reads: 'Find the value of x, correct to 4 significant figures, for which ln(x) + ln(x − 2) = 1.' A student writes: ln(x(x−2)) = 1, so x(x−2) = e, then x² − 2x − e = 0, giving x = (2 ± √(4 + 4e))/2 = 1 ± √(1 + e). The student writes x = 1 + √(1 + e) ≈ 3.928 as the answer and discards the negative root. Which statement about this response is correct?

The response is incorrect because both roots of the quadratic are valid solutions to the original equation. The response is incomplete because the student should test both roots numerically before rejecting one. The response would lose a mark because the student must state the domain restriction before combining the logarithms. The response is complete and correct: the negative root is validly rejected because ln(x) requires x > 0 and x − 2 > 0, so x > 2, and x = 1 − √(1 + e) < 0 fails this domain restriction.

How to read a score out of 10

The easy and at-level content is secure. The useful question now is how far above the year level the student can go, which a ten-item quiz cannot show. The free Skills Check adds stretch and challenge questions on every topic so you can see the ceiling as well as the floor.

Solid, with one or two specific gaps. Look at which topic the incorrect answers came from (the results panel names the weakest topic) and spend a week on that topic before re-testing with a different seed.

Some core ideas are shaky. The pattern matters more than the score: two misses in the same topic is a gap; misses scattered across topics usually means reading the question too fast. Either way, the Skills Check will tell you which.

Foundations from an earlier year are probably missing, which is common and fixable. Try the quiz one year level down to confirm, then talk to a tutor about a short catch-up plan rather than more of the same practice.
