The imaginary unit i satisfies i² = −1. A complex number z = a + bi has real part a and imaginary part b.
The conjugate of z = a + bi is a − bi; the modulus |z| = √(a² + b²); z times its conjugate equals |z|².
Add and subtract by combining real and imaginary parts; multiply by expanding and replacing i² with −1.
To divide, multiply numerator and denominator by the conjugate of the denominator. Quadratics with negative discriminant have conjugate complex roots.
Worked example: (3 + 2i)/(1 − i) = (3 + 2i)(1 + i)/((1 − i)(1 + i)) = (3 + 5i + 2i²)/2 = (1 + 5i)/2.
Common mistake: treating i² as 1, so (2i)² becomes 4 rather than the correct −4.
Common mistake: multiplying only the denominator by the conjugate when dividing; the numerator must be multiplied by the same conjugate.

How to revise this: do five Cartesian-form arithmetic questions daily by hand and check each on the CAS in complex mode until the working is automatic.
