What this Year 11 Specialist Mathematics quiz tests

Specialist Mathematics at Year 11 is the most demanding VCE maths subject and is taken alongside Methods, so it assumes Methods-level algebra as a given. The questions here cover Complex numbers, Vectors, Proof & logic, Calculus & differential equations, Kinematics and Statistical inference at the easy and at-level tiers of the study design: complex numbers, vectors, proof, calculus techniques and, in Year 12, kinematics and statistical inference. Use it as a quick check that the technique is fluent, then move to full worked problems where the reasoning and the presentation are what earn the marks.

Who it is for

It suits Year 11 students who want a low-stakes check of the foundations their VCE Specialist Mathematics course assumes, parents of VCE students who want to see whether the basics are secure before the SACs start counting, and students deciding between subjects for next year.

Topics in this quiz

Each set of ten is spread across these 6 topics and mixes easy and at-level questions. The stretch and challenge tiers are reserved for the free Skills Check, which is where a strong student's ceiling shows.

Question 1
Vectors

Find (5, 3) − (2, 1).

Question 2
Calculus & differential equations

A particle moves along the x-axis with acceleration a(t) = 6t − 4 m/s². At t = 0, velocity is 2 m/s and position is x = 1 m. What is the particle's position at t = 3 s?

Question 3
Complex numbers

Simplify (2 + 3i) + (1 − i).

Question 4
Complex numbers

If z = r(cos θ + i sin θ) with r > 0, which of the following is always equal to z·z̄?

Question 5
Proof & logic

Consider the two statements below. Statement A: 'If n is divisible by 6, then n is divisible by 2.' Statement B: 'If n is divisible by 2, then n is divisible by 6.' Which of the following correctly describes the logical relationship between Statement A and Statement B?

Question 6
Statistical inference

The best single estimate of a population mean is the?

Question 7
Kinematics

If v = 4t, displacement (with s=0 at t=0) is?

Question 8
Kinematics

If displacement s = t², velocity ds/dt is?

Question 9
Vectors

The unit vector in the direction of (3, 4) is?

Question 10
Statistical inference

A student takes 200 independent random samples from the same population and constructs a 90% confidence interval for the population mean from each sample. Approximately how many of these intervals would NOT be expected to contain the true population mean?

How to read a score out of ten

9 or 10 out of 10
The easy and at-level content is secure. The useful question now is how far above the year level the student can go, which a ten-item quiz cannot show. The free Skills Check adds stretch and challenge questions on every topic so you can see the ceiling as well as the floor.
7 or 8 out of 10
Solid, with one or two specific gaps. Look at which topic the incorrect answers came from (the results panel names the weakest topic) and spend a week on that topic before re-testing with a different seed.
5 or 6 out of 10
Some core ideas are shaky. The pattern matters more than the score: two misses in the same topic is a gap; misses scattered across topics usually means reading the question too fast. Either way, the Skills Check will tell you which.
4 or fewer out of 10
Foundations from an earlier year are probably missing, which is common and fixable. Try the quiz one year level down to confirm, then talk to a tutor about a short catch-up plan rather than more of the same practice.

Why ten questions is a snapshot, not a diagnosis

A ten-item quiz can tell you whether the easy and at-level content is in place; it cannot tell you how a student copes with the multi-step, above-level questions that separate a Developing result from a Strong or Exceeding one, and it cannot see whether a wrong answer was a gap, a slip or a misreading. That is why every RHZ student starts with the free Skills Check instead: a longer set pitched at the top of the study design, scored on the server, and turned into a plain-English report that names the secure topics, the shaky ones and the recommended next step. A tutor then phones to walk through it. Use this page to get a quick pulse, and the Skills Check to decide what to do.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Year 11 Specialist Mathematics quiz really free?

Yes. No sign-up, no email, no payment. You can take it as many times as you like; add ?seed= to the address or press "New set of questions" for a different ten. The full-length Skills Check is also free, but it asks for a parent email so we can send the report.

Where do the questions come from?

From RHZ Tutoring's own curriculum-aligned question banks, the same banks our tutors use in sessions and in the free Skills Check. Every question was written to a specific VCE study design reference, checked by a tutor and run through an automated quality gate before it can be served.

Are the answers marked online?

Yes. When you press "Mark my answers" the page fetches the answer key from our server and shows a score, the correct answer for each question, a short explanation where one exists, and the topic that needs the most work. Nothing is stored and nothing identifies your child.

Is the quiz the same every time?

No. The ten questions are chosen from a larger pool of easy and at-level items, spread across the Year 11 topics, and a different seed gives a different set. The default set on this page is fixed so that a shared link shows the same quiz.

How is this different from the Skills Check?

This quiz is ten questions at the easy and at-level tiers, marked instantly, with no report. The free Skills Check is about 15 minutes, covers every topic for the year, includes stretch and challenge questions pitched at the top of the year, and produces a same-day topic-by-topic report that a tutor walks you through. Use this page for a quick pulse; use the Skills Check to decide what to do next.
