What Year 12 students need to know about creative and persuasive writing

A short orientation first. In Units 3 and 4 creating texts requires writing within a framework of ideas, drawing on mentor texts, demonstrating control of form, voice and structure and writing a reflective commentary.

Our tutors wrote and checked these questions against the VCE study design, which is why the wording and the difficulty match what a Year 12 student meets at school.

The usual creative and persuasive writing errors at Year 12

If your child gets a question wrong here, it is worth checking whether one of these is behind it. They are the creative and persuasive writing misconceptions RHZ tutors correct most often with Year 12 students:

• The piece ignores the framework of ideas.
• Mentor texts are copied rather than drawn on.
• The voice changes partway through.

Spotting which one applies is the useful part; the fix is usually quick once the misunderstanding is out in the open.

How to practise creative and persuasive writing at home

Practice works when it is short, regular and specific. For creative and persuasive writing, our tutors suggest:

1. Analyse a mentor text for one technique and use it deliberately.
2. Draft, get feedback and redraft.
3. Write a reflective commentary for every piece.

For VCE English, read the set texts twice, build quote banks by theme and write under time on unseen topics with feedback from a teacher or tutor.

It lacks a topic sentence to introduce the paragraph. It should cite a specific scientist by name to be persuasive. It uses an appeal to emotion rather than evidence. It makes an absolute claim ('every scientist') that cannot be verified and is almost certainly false, undermining the writer's credibility.

A student is writing a persuasive piece arguing for stricter regulations on fast fashion. She includes the following sentence: 'Of course, some argue that fast fashion provides affordable clothing for low-income families — and they have a point.' What persuasive technique is she using, and why is it effective?

A rhetorical question — prompting the reader to agree by implying the answer. An appeal to authority — citing expert opinion to validate her argument. Concession and rebuttal — acknowledging the opposing view to appear reasonable before countering it. Anaphora — repeating a phrase to build emotional rhythm.

Her only supporting evidence is a personal anecdote about a friend who felt anxious after using Instagram. Which statement best identifies the logical weakness in her argument?

The contention is too emotive to be taken seriously in a formal essay. Personal anecdotes are never acceptable as evidence in persuasive writing. A single anecdote cannot establish that social media harms teenagers as a group, so the evidence does not support the scope of the contention. The essay needs more technical vocabulary to be persuasive.

How to read a score out of 10

9 or 10 out of 10

The easy and at-level content is secure. The useful question now is how far above the year level the student can go, which a ten-item quiz cannot show. The free Skills Check adds stretch and challenge questions on every topic so you can see the ceiling as well as the floor.

7 or 8 out of 10

Solid, with one or two specific gaps. Look at which topic the incorrect answers came from (the results panel names the weakest topic) and spend a week on that topic before re-testing with a different seed.

5 or 6 out of 10

Some core ideas are shaky. The pattern matters more than the score: two misses in the same topic is a gap; misses scattered across topics usually means reading the question too fast. Either way, the Skills Check will tell you which.

4 or fewer out of 10

Foundations from an earlier year are probably missing, which is common and fixable. Try the quiz one year level down to confirm, then talk to a tutor about a short catch-up plan rather than more of the same practice.
