VCE Chemistry at Year 12: what the curriculum expects

VCE Chemistry Units 3 and 4 covers fuels and energy, equilibrium, electrochemistry, organic chemistry and analytical techniques.

This topic sits inside the VCE study design for Year 12 science; the questions stay at the easy and at-level tiers so the result is a fair check of the foundations.

Common VCE Chemistry misconceptions tutors see

The distractors in this quiz are built from real misconceptions rather than random wrong numbers, so a specific wrong answer usually points to a specific gap. The ones we see most at Year 12:

None of these is a sign of low ability. Each is a reasonable idea that worked in an earlier year and needs replacing, which is exactly what a good explanation, or a tutor, does.

Practising VCE Chemistry with a Year 12 student

The habits that move VCE Chemistry from shaky to secure at Year 12:

  1. Write equilibrium explanations in the standard form.
  2. Learn the oxidation-reduction rules.
  3. Name organic compounds from structures.

VCE science demands precise terminology and structured explanations. Make summary notes per area of study, practise past exam questions and mark against the study design.

How the 10 questions are chosen

The 10 questions are drawn from 21 eligible items on VCE Chemistry in our Year 12 science bank, all at the easy and at-level tiers. The selection is fixed for this address so a shared link shows the same quiz; press New set of questions or add ?seed= to the address for a different mix. Options are shuffled, no two questions share a stem, and the answer key is fetched from our server only after you submit, so it is not hidden in the page.

Because every question here is on VCE Chemistry, a low score is a clear signal and a high score is genuinely reassuring for this topic. What it cannot tell you is whether the other Year 12 science topics are equally secure, or how far above the year level the student can go; the free Skills Check covers both.

Question 1
VCE Chemistry

In the Haber process, the equilibrium N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g) is established at 400 °C and 200 atm. The temperature is then increased to 500 °C at constant pressure. Which of the following correctly predicts both the direction of the equilibrium shift AND the effect on the value of Kc?

Question 2
VCE Chemistry

Avogadro's number is approximately…

Question 3
VCE Chemistry

Consider the following standard reduction potentials: Fe³⁺(aq) + e⁻ → Fe²⁺(aq) E° = +0.77 V Sn⁴⁺(aq) + 2e⁻ → Sn²⁺(aq) E° = +0.15 V A galvanic cell is constructed with these two half-cells under standard conditions. Which statement correctly describes the cell?

Question 4
VCE Chemistry

A covalent bond involves…

Question 5
VCE Chemistry

The pH scale runs from…

Question 6
VCE Chemistry

In a redox reaction, oxidation is…

Question 7
VCE Chemistry

A student electrolyses a solution of copper(II) sulfate using inert platinum electrodes, passing a constant current of 2.00 A for 16 minutes and 5 seconds. What mass of copper (in grams) is deposited at the cathode? (F = 96 500 C mol⁻¹, M(Cu) = 63.5 g mol⁻¹)

Question 8
VCE Chemistry

Which statement correctly describes the relationship between bond polarity and molecular polarity in carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water (H₂O)?

Question 9
VCE Chemistry

An ionic bond forms by…

Question 10
VCE Chemistry

A buffer solution is prepared by mixing 0.200 mol of ethanoic acid (pKa = 4.76) with 0.100 mol of sodium ethanoate in 1.00 L of solution. What is the pH of this buffer?

How to read a score out of 10

9 or 10 out of 10
The easy and at-level content is secure. The useful question now is how far above the year level the student can go, which a ten-item quiz cannot show. The free Skills Check adds stretch and challenge questions on every topic so you can see the ceiling as well as the floor.
7 or 8 out of 10
Solid, with one or two specific gaps. Look at which topic the incorrect answers came from (the results panel names the weakest topic) and spend a week on that topic before re-testing with a different seed.
5 or 6 out of 10
Some core ideas are shaky. The pattern matters more than the score: two misses in the same topic is a gap; misses scattered across topics usually means reading the question too fast. Either way, the Skills Check will tell you which.
4 or fewer out of 10
Foundations from an earlier year are probably missing, which is common and fixable. Try the quiz one year level down to confirm, then talk to a tutor about a short catch-up plan rather than more of the same practice.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Year 12 VCE Chemistry quiz free?

Yes, completely: no sign-up, no email, no payment, and you can take it as many times as you like. It is one of 3,261 free practice questions RHZ Tutoring publishes across Prep to Year 12. Press New set of questions, or add ?seed= to the address, for a different selection from the same topic.

Why only 10 questions on one topic?

Because a single-topic set is the most precise free check available: if the score is low, the gap is in VCE Chemistry and nowhere else. There are 21 eligible questions on this topic in our Year 12 Science bank, so several different sets are available before any repeat.

Where do the VCE Chemistry questions come from?

From RHZ Tutoring's own Year 12 Science question bank, written to the VCE study design, checked by a tutor and passed through an automated quality gate. The same bank feeds our tutoring sessions and the free Skills Check. The questions on this page sit at the easy and at-level tiers.

What should I do if the score is low?

Read the explanation for each incorrect answer first; most gaps in VCE Chemistry are one of the misconceptions listed on this page. Then try a second set a few days later. If it is still low, the free Skills Check will show whether the gap is confined to this topic, and a tutor can build a short catch-up plan.

Is there a mixed Year 12 Science quiz?

Yes. The Year 12 Science quiz spreads ten questions across every topic for the year, and the hub lists topic quizzes for every year level from Prep to Year 12.
