What this Year 12 Science quiz tests

Year 12 VCE science, whether Biology, Chemistry or Physics, assumes confident recall of the Year 10 concepts and the working-scientifically skills: variables, units, reading a graph and writing a two- or three-mark explanation. This quiz checks that foundation across VCE Biology, VCE Chemistry, VCE Physics and Practical & exam skills. It is not a unit-level revision test; it is a quick signal of which strand needs attention before the SACs and the end-of-year exam.

Who it is for

It suits Year 12 students who want a low-stakes check of the foundations their VCE Science course assumes, parents of VCE students who want to see whether the basics are secure before the SACs start counting, and students deciding between subjects for next year.

Topics in this quiz

Each set of ten is spread across these 4 topics and mixes easy and at-level questions. The stretch and challenge tiers are reserved for the free Skills Check, which is where a strong student's ceiling shows.

Question 1
Practical & exam skills

A result that doesn't fit the pattern is an…

Question 2
VCE Physics

A spacecraft of mass 2000 kg travels at 0.60c relative to Earth. Mission control on Earth measures the journey to a distant station as taking 10.0 years. How long does the astronaut on board measure for the same journey? (γ at 0.60c ≈ 1.25)

Question 3
VCE Chemistry

Elements in the same group have the same number of…

Question 4
Practical & exam skills

During a titration experiment, a student's results are: Trial 1 — 24.85 mL, Trial 2 — 24.90 mL, Trial 3 — 18.20 mL. The student calculates the mean of all three trials as 22.65 mL. What error has the student made, and what is the correct concordant mean?

Question 5
VCE Physics

A photon of wavelength 4.0 × 10⁻¹⁰ m collides with a stationary electron and the scattered photon has a wavelength of 4.024 × 10⁻¹⁰ m. Which of the following correctly describes what has happened to the electron's kinetic energy and the photon's energy, and why?

Question 6
VCE Biology

In a negative feedback system controlling blood glucose, which hormone is released when blood glucose rises too high?

Question 7
VCE Biology

A population of mice lives in a sandy desert environment. Mice with lighter fur are better camouflaged against predators than mice with darker fur. Over many generations, the average fur colour shifts toward lighter shades. Which combination of evolutionary mechanisms is MOST likely driving this change?

Question 8
VCE Chemistry

An ionic bond forms by…

Question 9
VCE Physics

Work done equals force ×…

Question 10
VCE Chemistry

Ethanol (C₂H₅OH) can be produced by fermentation of glucose or by hydration of ethene. A chemist reacts 5.60 L of ethene gas (measured at STP, 0 °C and 100 kPa) with excess steam. The reaction has a 75.0% yield. What mass of ethanol is produced? (Molar volume at STP = 22.4 L mol⁻¹; M(ethanol) = 46.0 g mol⁻¹)

How to read a score out of ten

9 or 10 out of 10
The easy and at-level content is secure. The useful question now is how far above the year level the student can go, which a ten-item quiz cannot show. The free Skills Check adds stretch and challenge questions on every topic so you can see the ceiling as well as the floor.
7 or 8 out of 10
Solid, with one or two specific gaps. Look at which topic the incorrect answers came from (the results panel names the weakest topic) and spend a week on that topic before re-testing with a different seed.
5 or 6 out of 10
Some core ideas are shaky. The pattern matters more than the score: two misses in the same topic is a gap; misses scattered across topics usually means reading the question too fast. Either way, the Skills Check will tell you which.
4 or fewer out of 10
Foundations from an earlier year are probably missing, which is common and fixable. Try the quiz one year level down to confirm, then talk to a tutor about a short catch-up plan rather than more of the same practice.

Why ten questions is a snapshot, not a diagnosis

A ten-item quiz can tell you whether the easy and at-level content is in place; it cannot tell you how a student copes with the multi-step, above-level questions that separate a Developing result from a Strong or Exceeding one, and it cannot see whether a wrong answer was a gap, a slip or a misreading. That is why every RHZ student starts with the free Skills Check instead: a longer set pitched at the top of the study design, scored on the server, and turned into a plain-English report that names the secure topics, the shaky ones and the recommended next step. A tutor then phones to walk through it. Use this page to get a quick pulse, and the Skills Check to decide what to do.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Year 12 Science quiz really free?

Yes. No sign-up, no email, no payment. You can take it as many times as you like; add ?seed= to the address or press "New set of questions" for a different ten. The full-length Skills Check is also free, but it asks for a parent email so we can send the report.

Where do the questions come from?

From RHZ Tutoring's own curriculum-aligned question banks, the same banks our tutors use in sessions and in the free Skills Check. Every question was written to a specific VCE study design reference, checked by a tutor and run through an automated quality gate before it can be served.

Are the answers marked online?

Yes. When you press "Mark my answers" the page fetches the answer key from our server and shows a score, the correct answer for each question, a short explanation where one exists, and the topic that needs the most work. Nothing is stored and nothing identifies your child.

Is the quiz the same every time?

No. The ten questions are chosen from a larger pool of easy and at-level items, spread across the Year 12 topics, and a different seed gives a different set. The default set on this page is fixed so that a shared link shows the same quiz.

How is this different from the Skills Check?

This quiz is ten questions at the easy and at-level tiers, marked instantly, with no report. The free Skills Check is about 15 minutes, covers every topic for the year, includes stretch and challenge questions pitched at the top of the year, and produces a same-day topic-by-topic report that a tutor walks you through. Use this page for a quick pulse; use the Skills Check to decide what to do next.
