Year 12 Vectors notes: the key ideas

In three dimensions a = a₁i + a₂j + a₃k with |a| = √(a₁² + a₂² + a₃²) and a·b = a₁b₁ + a₂b₂ + a₃b₃.
The scalar resolute of a on b is a·b̂; the vector resolute is (a·b̂)b̂, and subtracting it from a gives the perpendicular component.
The cross product a × b is perpendicular to both vectors; a line is r = a + tb and a plane is r·n = a·n.
Differentiate r(t) component-wise for velocity and acceleration; vector proofs use a·b = 0 to show perpendicularity.
Worked example: resolve a = 2i + 3j − k along b = i + 2j + 2k. Then a·b = 6 and |b| = 3, so the scalar resolute is 2 and the vector resolute is (2/3)b.
Common mistake: dividing by |a| instead of |b| when resolving a in the direction of b, which resolves in the wrong direction.
Common mistake: reporting a negative magnitude after dropping direction; magnitudes are never negative.

How to revise this: prove standard geometric results such as the diagonals of a rhombus being perpendicular using vectors, and use the CAS for three-dimensional arithmetic in Exam 2 practice.
