Year 3 Writing & grammar notes: the key ideas

A one-page summary of writing and grammar at Year 3 level, written by RHZ tutors to the Victorian Curriculum. Read it before the quiz, or print it for revision.

Direct speech is the exact words a character says, wrapped in quotation marks with punctuation inside the closing mark.
An apostrophe of contraction marks missing letters: can not becomes can't, it is becomes it's.
Sentence variety means mixing short and long sentences and changing how they begin, so writing does not sound flat.
Adverbs tell how, when or where a verb happens (slowly, yesterday, outside); adjectives describe nouns.
Plan a narrative with orientation, complication and resolution; plan an information text with a topic and paragraphs of facts.
Tense must stay consistent: choose past or present for the whole piece and check every verb.
Worked example: 'Wait for me!' shouted Ben. The exclamation mark sits inside the quotation marks, and shouted is a speech verb with a lowercase s.
Common mistake: adding quotation marks but no comma or capital, giving 'she said lets go'; correct is: She said, 'Let's go.'
Common mistake: writing its with an apostrophe for belonging, as in 'the dog wagged it's tail'; it's always means it is.

How to revise this: rewrite a page of dialogue from a favourite book from memory, then compare your punctuation line by line with the original.
