A natural material is found in nature and used with little change, such as wood, wool, cotton, stone and sand.
A processed material has been changed by people from natural materials, such as paper from wood, glass from sand or plastic from oil.
Every material has properties like strength, flexibility, absorbency, transparency and heat resistance that suit it to certain uses.
Processing changes properties: raw sheep fleece is greasy and tangled, but washed and spun wool becomes soft yarn for jumpers.
Designers match properties to the job: saucepans need a material that conducts heat but does not melt.
Worked example: Paper towel, cotton cloth and plastic wrap were tested with water drops; the paper towel soaked up the most, so it is best for spills.
Common mistake: Thinking natural materials are always better or safer than processed ones. Each has properties that suit particular purposes.
Common mistake: Thinking a material is natural just because it is common, like glass or paper. Both are processed from natural materials by people.
