A ratio compares parts of a group: 2 red to 3 blue is written 2:3.
Part-to-part compares one part with another (2:3); part-to-whole compares a part with everything (2 out of 5, or 2/5).
Equivalent ratios are made by multiplying or dividing both parts by the same number: 2:3 = 4:6 = 10:15.
A rate compares different quantities, like dollars per kilogram; a unit rate gives the amount for one: $12 for 3 kg is $4 per kg.
Compare rates only in the same units, and scale a recipe by multiplying every ingredient by the same factor.
Worked example: Cordial is mixed 1:4 with water. For 3 cups of cordial, multiply both parts by 3: 3:12, so 12 cups of water.
Common mistake: Reading the ratio 2:3 as the fraction 2/3. With 2 red and 3 blue there are 5 in total, so red is 2/5.
Common mistake: Making an equivalent ratio by adding the same number to both parts, so 2:3 becomes 3:4. Multiply instead: 4:6.
