What Year 7 students need to know about comprehension

A short orientation first. Year 7 comprehension covers reading a range of literary and informative texts, identifying purpose and audience, inferring meaning, summarising and analysing how language choices shape meaning.

Our tutors wrote and checked these questions against the Victorian Curriculum, which is why the wording and the difficulty match what a Year 7 student meets at school.

The usual comprehension errors at Year 7

If your child gets a question wrong here, it is worth checking whether one of these is behind it. They are the comprehension misconceptions RHZ tutors correct most often with Year 7 students:

• The author's tone is missed, so irony reads as sincerity.
• Evidence is quoted without explaining what it shows.
• The question is answered in general terms without reference to the text.

None of these is a sign of low ability. Each is a reasonable idea that worked in an earlier year and needs replacing, which is exactly what a good explanation, or a tutor, does.

How to practise comprehension at home

Practice works when it is short, regular and specific. For comprehension, our tutors suggest:

1. Compare two texts on the same topic and note the differences in language.
2. Summarise a longer text in fifty words.
3. Read editorials and opinion pieces and identify the writer's position and tone.

From Year 7, comprehension and writing improve fastest when students read widely and practise short, timed responses with a specific structure.

About the questions on this page

The 10 questions are drawn from 15 eligible items on comprehension in our Year 7 English bank, all at the easy and at-level tiers. The selection is fixed for this address so a shared link shows the same quiz; press New set of questions or add ?seed= to the address for a different mix. Options are shuffled, no two questions share a stem, and the answer key is fetched from our server only after you submit, so it is not hidden in the page.

A single-topic quiz is more precise than a mixed one: if the score here is low, the gap is in comprehension, not somewhere in Year 7 English generally. It is still short, though, and it cannot show how a student copes with the stretch and challenge questions that decide a top result. That is what the free Skills Check adds.

The noise from the street outside, the smell of burnt toast, the argument two rooms away — all of it pressed in. He closed his textbook. He would try again later, he told himself. But later never came." What does the final sentence 'But later never came' most strongly imply about Jordan?

He was so tired that he fell asleep immediately after closing the book. He kept putting off studying and did not return to it. He was interrupted again before he had a chance to reopen his textbook. He decided that the subject was too difficult to ever understand.

Read this passage, then answer the question. "A review of a local restaurant read: 'The pasta was cooked to perfection and the service was prompt. However, the dessert menu was limited and the music was far too loud for a conversation. We left satisfied, but not eager to return.'" What can the reader conclude about the reviewer's overall opinion of the restaurant?

The reviewer was very happy with the restaurant and would recommend it to others. The reviewer had a mixed experience — some aspects were good but enough negatives meant they were unlikely to come back. The reviewer could not decide whether the restaurant was good or bad and gave no clear opinion. The reviewer was completely disappointed and would warn others to avoid it.

Read: "Maya found a small bird with a hurt wing in her backyard. She made it a cosy box with soft cloth and gave it water. Each morning she checked on it. After a week, the bird flapped its wings and flew away. Maya felt happy but a little sad to see it go." What did she put in the box?

Read this passage, then answer the question. "After the match, the coach gathered the team. 'We worked hard today,' he said. 'There were moments in the second half that showed real character.' He paused. 'But we know what we need to improve.' No one spoke. The players stared at the ground." Which statement best describes what the coach's speech implies about the result?

The coach is angry with the team for not following his instructions during the match. The team performed so well that the coach cannot think of anything specific to criticise. The team most likely lost or underperformed, as the coach focuses on effort and avoids praising the outcome. The team won easily because the coach praises their character and hard work.

How to read a score out of 10

9 or 10 out of 10

The easy and at-level content is secure. The useful question now is how far above the year level the student can go, which a ten-item quiz cannot show. The free Skills Check adds stretch and challenge questions on every topic so you can see the ceiling as well as the floor.

7 or 8 out of 10

Solid, with one or two specific gaps. Look at which topic the incorrect answers came from (the results panel names the weakest topic) and spend a week on that topic before re-testing with a different seed.

5 or 6 out of 10

Some core ideas are shaky. The pattern matters more than the score: two misses in the same topic is a gap; misses scattered across topics usually means reading the question too fast. Either way, the Skills Check will tell you which.

4 or fewer out of 10

Foundations from an earlier year are probably missing, which is common and fixable. Try the quiz one year level down to confirm, then talk to a tutor about a short catch-up plan rather than more of the same practice.
