Algebraic expressions at Year 7: what the curriculum expects

Year 7 algebra introduces pronumerals: writing expressions from words, substituting values, collecting like terms, multiplying and dividing simple terms, expanding a bracket with a numerical factor and using formulas.

This topic sits inside the Victorian Curriculum for Year 7 maths; the questions stay at the easy and at-level tiers so the result is a fair check of the foundations.

Common algebraic expressions misconceptions tutors see

The distractors in this quiz are built from real misconceptions rather than random wrong numbers, so a specific wrong answer usually points to a specific gap. The ones we see most at Year 7:

Spotting which one applies is the useful part; the fix is usually quick once the misunderstanding is out in the open.

Practising algebraic expressions with a Year 7 student

The habits that move algebraic expressions from shaky to secure at Year 7:

  1. Substitute numbers to check whether two expressions are really equal.
  2. Sort a list of terms into like and unlike before simplifying.
  3. Use area models to expand brackets.

In secondary school the lift comes from regular independent practice with worked solutions to check against, and from fixing errors the same day. Twenty minutes, four times a week, is enough.

About the questions on this page

We keep 17 algebraic expressions questions for Year 7 that meet our standard, at the easy and at-level tiers, and this page serves 10 of them at a time. The default set is stable, so a teacher or parent can share the link; a fresh set is one click away. Marking happens on our server so the answer key cannot be read from the page.

A single-topic quiz is more precise than a mixed one: if the score here is low, the gap is in algebraic expressions, not somewhere in Year 7 maths generally. It is still short, though, and it cannot show how a student copes with the stretch and challenge questions that decide a top result. That is what the free Skills Check adds.

Question 1
Algebraic expressions

The expression 5n + 3 gives Maya's weekly savings in dollars, where n is the number of odd jobs she completes. She wants to save exactly $33 in one week. Which value of n makes the expression equal to 33?

Question 2
Algebraic expressions

If x = 4, find 3x.

Question 3
Algebraic expressions

Simplify: 4a + 3a.

Question 4
Algebraic expressions

A square has a side length of (2x + 3) cm. Which expression represents its perimeter?

Question 5
Algebraic expressions

Write 'five more than n' as an expression.

Question 6
Algebraic expressions

A market stall charges $c for each cup of juice. In the morning it sells 12 cups. In the afternoon the price drops by $1 and the stall sells 20 cups. The total income for the whole day is $88. Which equation correctly models this situation?

Question 7
Algebraic expressions

Simplify: 5x + 2 − 3x + 4.

Question 8
Algebraic expressions

The expression 4(2n + 3) − 2(n − 1) is simplified. Which of the following is the correct simplified form?

Question 9
Algebraic expressions

Factorise: 6x + 9.

Question 10
Algebraic expressions

Layla is thinking of a number. She multiplies her number by 3, then subtracts 4. Her friend doubles the result and gets 22. What was Layla's number?

How to read a score out of 10

9 or 10 out of 10
The easy and at-level content is secure. The useful question now is how far above the year level the student can go, which a ten-item quiz cannot show. The free Skills Check adds stretch and challenge questions on every topic so you can see the ceiling as well as the floor.
7 or 8 out of 10
Solid, with one or two specific gaps. Look at which topic the incorrect answers came from (the results panel names the weakest topic) and spend a week on that topic before re-testing with a different seed.
5 or 6 out of 10
Some core ideas are shaky. The pattern matters more than the score: two misses in the same topic is a gap; misses scattered across topics usually means reading the question too fast. Either way, the Skills Check will tell you which.
4 or fewer out of 10
Foundations from an earlier year are probably missing, which is common and fixable. Try the quiz one year level down to confirm, then talk to a tutor about a short catch-up plan rather than more of the same practice.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Year 7 algebraic expressions quiz free?

Yes, completely: no sign-up, no email, no payment, and you can take it as many times as you like. It is one of 3,261 free practice questions RHZ Tutoring publishes across Prep to Year 12. Press New set of questions, or add ?seed= to the address, for a different selection from the same topic.

Why only 10 questions on one topic?

Because a single-topic set is the most precise free check available: if the score is low, the gap is in algebraic expressions and nowhere else. There are 17 eligible questions on this topic in our Year 7 Maths bank, so several different sets are available before any repeat.

Where do the algebraic expressions questions come from?

From RHZ Tutoring's own Year 7 Maths question bank, written to the Victorian Curriculum, checked by a tutor and passed through an automated quality gate. The same bank feeds our tutoring sessions and the free Skills Check. The questions on this page sit at the easy and at-level tiers.

What should I do if the score is low?

Read the explanation for each incorrect answer first; most gaps in algebraic expressions are one of the misconceptions listed on this page. Then try a second set a few days later. If it is still low, the free Skills Check will show whether the gap is confined to this topic, and a tutor can build a short catch-up plan.

Is there a mixed Year 7 Maths quiz?

Yes. The Year 7 Maths quiz spreads ten questions across every topic for the year, and the hub lists topic quizzes for every year level from Prep to Year 12.
