Probability at Year 8: what the curriculum expects

Year 8 probability covers two-step experiments with tables and tree diagrams, Venn diagrams, two-way tables, complementary events and the language of and, or and not.

This topic sits inside the Victorian Curriculum for Year 8 maths; the questions stay at the easy and at-level tiers so the result is a fair check of the foundations.

Common probability misconceptions tutors see

The distractors in this quiz are built from real misconceptions rather than random wrong numbers, so a specific wrong answer usually points to a specific gap. The ones we see most at Year 8:

Each of these is fixable in a session or two once it has been named, which is why the results panel below shows the correct answer and an explanation rather than just a score.

Practising probability with a Year 8 student

The habits that move probability from shaky to secure at Year 8:

  1. Draw a tree diagram for every two-step problem.
  2. Use two-way tables to check Venn diagram answers.
  3. Simulate with coins and dice and compare with theory.

In secondary school the lift comes from regular independent practice with worked solutions to check against, and from fixing errors the same day. Twenty minutes, four times a week, is enough.

About the questions on this page

Every set on this page is a seeded selection of 10 from the 12 probability questions that pass our quality gate. A different seed gives a different set, and there are many more combinations than any one student will need. The correct answers never appear in the page source; the browser asks our server for them after you press Mark my answers.

A single-topic quiz is more precise than a mixed one: if the score here is low, the gap is in probability, not somewhere in Year 8 maths generally. It is still short, though, and it cannot show how a student copes with the stretch and challenge questions that decide a top result. That is what the free Skills Check adds.

Question 1
Probability

A bag has 3 green and 5 orange marbles. Two marbles are drawn one after the other WITHOUT replacement. Given that the first marble drawn was orange, what is the probability that the second marble is also orange?

Question 2
Probability

Lena has designed a game where the probability of winning is 0.3. She claims: 'If I play the game 10 times, I am guaranteed to win exactly 3 times because 10 × 0.3 = 3.' Which statement best explains why Lena's claim is WRONG?

Question 3
Probability

P(event) = 0.35. P(not event) is?

Question 4
Probability

A bag has 4 red and 6 blue. P(red) is?

Question 5
Probability

P(heads on one coin toss) is?

Question 6
Probability

The probability of a certain event is?

Question 7
Probability

Two coins are tossed. P(two heads) is?

Question 8
Probability

A traffic light is red for 40 seconds, green for 30 seconds, and amber for 10 seconds in every 80-second cycle. A driver arrives at a random time. What is the probability that the light is NOT red?

Question 9
Probability

A bag contains only red, blue and green marbles. P(red) = 0.3 and P(blue) = 0.45. If there are 40 marbles in total, how many green marbles are there?

Question 10
Probability

P(rolling a 4 on a fair die) is?

How to read a score out of 10

9 or 10 out of 10
The easy and at-level content is secure. The useful question now is how far above the year level the student can go, which a ten-item quiz cannot show. The free Skills Check adds stretch and challenge questions on every topic so you can see the ceiling as well as the floor.
7 or 8 out of 10
Solid, with one or two specific gaps. Look at which topic the incorrect answers came from (the results panel names the weakest topic) and spend a week on that topic before re-testing with a different seed.
5 or 6 out of 10
Some core ideas are shaky. The pattern matters more than the score: two misses in the same topic is a gap; misses scattered across topics usually means reading the question too fast. Either way, the Skills Check will tell you which.
4 or fewer out of 10
Foundations from an earlier year are probably missing, which is common and fixable. Try the quiz one year level down to confirm, then talk to a tutor about a short catch-up plan rather than more of the same practice.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Year 8 probability quiz free?

Yes, completely: no sign-up, no email, no payment, and you can take it as many times as you like. It is one of 3,261 free practice questions RHZ Tutoring publishes across Prep to Year 12. Press New set of questions, or add ?seed= to the address, for a different selection from the same topic.

Why only 10 questions on one topic?

Because a single-topic set is the most precise free check available: if the score is low, the gap is in probability and nowhere else. There are 12 eligible questions on this topic in our Year 8 Maths bank, so several different sets are available before any repeat.

Where do the probability questions come from?

From RHZ Tutoring's own Year 8 Maths question bank, written to the Victorian Curriculum, checked by a tutor and passed through an automated quality gate. The same bank feeds our tutoring sessions and the free Skills Check. The questions on this page sit at the easy and at-level tiers.

What should I do if the score is low?

Read the explanation for each incorrect answer first; most gaps in probability are one of the misconceptions listed on this page. Then try a second set a few days later. If it is still low, the free Skills Check will show whether the gap is confined to this topic, and a tutor can build a short catch-up plan.

Is there a mixed Year 8 Maths quiz?

Yes. The Year 8 Maths quiz spreads ten questions across every topic for the year, and the hub lists topic quizzes for every year level from Prep to Year 12.
