Chemistry at Year 8: what the curriculum expects

Year 8 chemistry covers the particle model, elements, compounds and mixtures, physical and chemical change and the properties of the states of matter.

This topic sits inside the Victorian Curriculum for Year 8 science; the questions stay at the easy and at-level tiers so the result is a fair check of the foundations.

Common chemistry misconceptions tutors see

The distractors in this quiz are built from real misconceptions rather than random wrong numbers, so a specific wrong answer usually points to a specific gap. The ones we see most at Year 8:

Spotting which one applies is the useful part; the fix is usually quick once the misunderstanding is out in the open.

Practising chemistry with a Year 8 student

The habits that move chemistry from shaky to secure at Year 8:

  1. Balance equations daily for a week.
  2. Classify changes at home as physical or chemical.
  3. Practise separating mixtures in the kitchen.

Secondary science relies on terminology and on explaining results with the right concept. Make summary notes, draw diagrams from memory and practise written explanations.

About the questions on this page

We keep 28 chemistry questions for Year 8 that meet our standard, at the easy and at-level tiers, and this page serves 10 of them at a time. The default set is stable, so a teacher or parent can share the link; a fresh set is one click away. Marking happens on our server so the answer key cannot be read from the page.

Because every question here is on chemistry, a low score is a clear signal and a high score is genuinely reassuring for this topic. What it cannot tell you is whether the other Year 8 science topics are equally secure, or how far above the year level the student can go; the free Skills Check covers both.

Question 1
Chemistry

Which statement about the particle model of matter is correct?

Question 2
Chemistry

A student investigates how temperature affects the rate at which an antacid tablet dissolves in water. She tries the experiment at 20 °C, 40 °C, and 60 °C, timing how long the tablet takes to fully dissolve. She uses the same brand of tablet each time but does not measure the mass of each tablet. Which is the most significant problem with her method?

Question 3
Chemistry

A solution turns blue litmus paper red. This tells you the solution is…

Question 4

The centre of an atom is the…

Question 5
Chemistry

Iron has atomic number 26 and mass number 56. A different iron atom (an isotope) has mass number 54. How many neutrons does this isotope contain?

Question 6
Chemistry

How many protons does an atom with atomic number 6 have?

Question 7
Chemistry

During a chemical reaction, the total mass of the substances…

Question 8
Chemistry

Which gas do plants take in for photosynthesis?

Question 9
Chemistry

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) breaks down into water (H₂O) and oxygen gas (O₂). A student decomposes 68 g of hydrogen peroxide and collects 32 g of oxygen gas. Using the law of conservation of mass, what mass of water is produced?

How to read a score out of 10

9 or 10 out of 10
The easy and at-level content is secure. The useful question now is how far above the year level the student can go, which a ten-item quiz cannot show. The free Skills Check adds stretch and challenge questions on every topic so you can see the ceiling as well as the floor.
7 or 8 out of 10
Solid, with one or two specific gaps. Look at which topic the incorrect answers came from (the results panel names the weakest topic) and spend a week on that topic before re-testing with a different seed.
5 or 6 out of 10
Some core ideas are shaky. The pattern matters more than the score: two misses in the same topic is a gap; misses scattered across topics usually means reading the question too fast. Either way, the Skills Check will tell you which.
4 or fewer out of 10
Foundations from an earlier year are probably missing, which is common and fixable. Try the quiz one year level down to confirm, then talk to a tutor about a short catch-up plan rather than more of the same practice.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Year 8 chemistry quiz free?

Yes, completely: no sign-up, no email, no payment, and you can take it as many times as you like. It is one of 3,261 free practice questions RHZ Tutoring publishes across Prep to Year 12. Press New set of questions, or add ?seed= to the address, for a different selection from the same topic.

Why only 10 questions on one topic?

Because a single-topic set is the most precise free check available: if the score is low, the gap is in chemistry and nowhere else. There are 28 eligible questions on this topic in our Year 8 Science bank, so several different sets are available before any repeat.

Where do the chemistry questions come from?

From RHZ Tutoring's own Year 8 Science question bank, written to the Victorian Curriculum, checked by a tutor and passed through an automated quality gate. The same bank feeds our tutoring sessions and the free Skills Check. The questions on this page sit at the easy and at-level tiers.

What should I do if the score is low?

Read the explanation for each incorrect answer first; most gaps in chemistry are one of the misconceptions listed on this page. Then try a second set a few days later. If it is still low, the free Skills Check will show whether the gap is confined to this topic, and a tutor can build a short catch-up plan.

Is there a mixed Year 8 Science quiz?

Yes. The Year 8 Science quiz spreads ten questions across every topic for the year, and the hub lists topic quizzes for every year level from Prep to Year 12.
