What Year 9 students need to know about persuasive and creative writing

A short orientation first. In Year 9 writing students craft persuasive pieces with rebuttal and varied evidence, and creative pieces that experiment with structure, voice and imagery for a particular effect.

Our tutors wrote and checked these questions against the Victorian Curriculum, which is why the wording and the difficulty match what a Year 9 student meets at school.

The usual persuasive and creative writing errors at Year 9

If your child gets a question wrong here, it is worth checking whether one of these is behind it. They are the persuasive and creative writing misconceptions RHZ tutors correct most often with Year 9 students:

• Paragraphs lack topic sentences and links.
• A persuasive piece lists opinions without evidence or reasoning.
• Creative writing tells rather than shows.

Spotting which one applies is the useful part; the fix is usually quick once the misunderstanding is out in the open.

How to practise persuasive and creative writing at home

Practice works when it is short, regular and specific. For persuasive and creative writing, our tutors suggest:

1. Rewrite a telling sentence as a showing one.
2. Plan three arguments with evidence and a rebuttal.
3. Read published opinion columns and label the techniques.

From Year 7, comprehension and writing improve fastest when students read widely and practise short, timed responses with a specific structure.

She writes: 'According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, communities with dedicated youth spaces report a 34% reduction in juvenile crime rates.' Her teacher says the evidence is 'well chosen but not yet well used.' What is the teacher most likely pointing out?

The statistic is too precise; rounding it to '30%' would make it sound more credible and easier for the council to remember. The evidence is from a national report, so it is irrelevant to a local council and should be replaced with a local news article. The student should not cite government sources in a persuasive letter because it sounds too formal for the genre. The student quotes the statistic but does not explain what it means for this specific community or connect it to the argument she is making — the evidence needs linking to the claim.

A persuasive text about climate policy uses this paragraph structure: 1. Claim: 'We must transition to renewable energy within a decade.' 2. Evidence: a CSIRO report on cost savings. 3. A peer reviewer says this paragraph is 'almost there but has a structural flaw.' What is the flaw?

How to read a score out of 10

9 or 10 out of 10

The easy and at-level content is secure. The useful question now is how far above the year level the student can go, which a ten-item quiz cannot show. The free Skills Check adds stretch and challenge questions on every topic so you can see the ceiling as well as the floor.

7 or 8 out of 10

Solid, with one or two specific gaps. Look at which topic the incorrect answers came from (the results panel names the weakest topic) and spend a week on that topic before re-testing with a different seed.

5 or 6 out of 10

Some core ideas are shaky. The pattern matters more than the score: two misses in the same topic is a gap; misses scattered across topics usually means reading the question too fast. Either way, the Skills Check will tell you which.

4 or fewer out of 10

Foundations from an earlier year are probably missing, which is common and fixable. Try the quiz one year level down to confirm, then talk to a tutor about a short catch-up plan rather than more of the same practice.
