What this Year 9 Science quiz tests

Year 9 science is where students decide whether they are a "science person", and that usually comes down to two things: knowing the terms and being able to explain a result with the right concept. The Victorian Curriculum for Year 9 covers biological, chemical, physical and earth sciences plus science inquiry skills, and this quiz draws on Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth & environmental science and Scientific inquiry. A strong score means the vocabulary and core concepts are there; the next step is practising the written explanations that tests reward.

Who it is for

It suits Year 9 students revising before a topic test or exam, parents who suspect a gap but cannot tell how big it is, and students at Victorian secondary colleges who want to check they are keeping pace with the science course rather than just keeping up with the homework.

Topics in this quiz

Each set of ten is spread across these 5 topics and mixes easy and at-level questions. The stretch and challenge tiers are reserved for the free Skills Check, which is where a strong student's ceiling shows.

Question 7

Question 8
Biology

Which blood cells fight infection?

Question 9
Chemistry

Sodium (Na) is in Group 1 of the periodic table. Chlorine (Cl) is in Group 17. When these two elements react, sodium loses one electron to form Na⁺ and chlorine gains one electron to form Cl⁻. Based on this pattern, predict what ions calcium (Ca, Group 2) and oxygen (O, Group 16) would form, and give the formula of the ionic compound they make.

Question 10
Scientific inquiry

A student hypothesises: 'The closer a plant is to a light source, the faster it will grow.' She places five identical seedlings at distances of 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm, 40 cm, and 50 cm from a lamp. After two weeks, she measures the height of each plant. Her results show no clear trend. Which is the most scientifically appropriate next step?

How to read a score out of ten

9 or 10 out of 10
The easy and at-level content is secure. The useful question now is how far above the year level the student can go, which a ten-item quiz cannot show. The free Skills Check adds stretch and challenge questions on every topic so you can see the ceiling as well as the floor.
7 or 8 out of 10
Solid, with one or two specific gaps. Look at which topic the incorrect answers came from (the results panel names the weakest topic) and spend a week on that topic before re-testing with a different seed.
5 or 6 out of 10
Some core ideas are shaky. The pattern matters more than the score: two misses in the same topic is a gap; misses scattered across topics usually means reading the question too fast. Either way, the Skills Check will tell you which.
4 or fewer out of 10
Foundations from an earlier year are probably missing, which is common and fixable. Try the quiz one year level down to confirm, then talk to a tutor about a short catch-up plan rather than more of the same practice.

Why ten questions is a snapshot, not a diagnosis

A ten-item quiz can tell you whether the easy and at-level content is in place; it cannot tell you how a student copes with the multi-step, above-level questions that separate a Developing result from a Strong or Exceeding one, and it cannot see whether a wrong answer was a gap, a slip or a misreading. That is why every RHZ student starts with the free Skills Check instead: about fifteen minutes across every topic for the year, pitched at the top of the year level, scored on the server, and turned into a plain-English report that names the secure topics, the shaky ones and the recommended next step. A tutor then phones to walk through it. Use this page to get a quick pulse, and the Skills Check to decide what to do.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Year 9 Science quiz really free?

Yes. No sign-up, no email, no payment. You can take it as many times as you like; add ?seed= to the address or press "New set of questions" for a different ten. The full-length Skills Check is also free, but it asks for a parent email so we can send the report.

Where do the questions come from?

From RHZ Tutoring's own curriculum-aligned question banks, the same banks our tutors use in sessions and in the free Skills Check. Every question was written to a specific Victorian Curriculum reference, checked by a tutor and run through an automated quality gate before it can be served.

Are the answers marked online?

Yes. When you press "Mark my answers" the page fetches the answer key from our server and shows a score, the correct answer for each question, a short explanation where one exists, and the topic that needs the most work. Nothing is stored and nothing identifies your child.

Is the quiz the same every time?

No. The ten questions are chosen from a larger pool of easy and at-level items, spread across the Year 9 topics, and a different seed gives a different set. The default set on this page is fixed so that a shared link shows the same quiz.

How is this different from the Skills Check?

This quiz is ten questions at the easy and at-level tiers, marked instantly, with no report. The free Skills Check is about 15 minutes, covers every topic for the year, includes stretch and challenge questions pitched at the top of the year, and produces a same-day topic-by-topic report that a tutor walks you through. Use this page for a quick pulse; use the Skills Check to decide what to do next.
