NAPLAN is sat in March by every student in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, and since 2023 results are reported in four proficiency levels: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support. The test is online and adaptive, which means the questions get harder as a student answers correctly. Parents in Melbourne's west often tell us the results came as a surprise, in both directions. Our approach is to remove the surprise: a free Skills Check in Term 4 or early Term 1 shows exactly which NAPLAN domain, and which skills within it, need work.
We do not run NAPLAN as a practice-test factory. Practice tests tell you what a child got wrong; they do not teach the skill. Instead, we use the Skills Check result to build a short program (usually six to ten weeks) that teaches the missing skills directly, then uses NAPLAN-style questions to check they have stuck. For Numeracy that is typically place value, fractions, measurement conversions and reading graphs; for Reading it is inference and vocabulary-in-context; for Conventions it is apostrophes, commas, homophones and subject-verb agreement.
Writing is the domain with the most marks riding on a single task, and the one where teaching makes the biggest difference. Students are given either a persuasive or a narrative prompt and do not know which until the day. We teach a plan for each: for persuasive, a clear contention, three developed arguments with evidence and a rebuttal; for narrative, a short orientation, one complication handled well, and a resolution with a change in the character. We mark to the ten NAPLAN writing criteria so students learn where the marks actually are.
For Year 7 and Year 9 students, NAPLAN Numeracy includes a calculator section and questions that assume algebra and geometry from the previous two years. Year 9 results also matter for some students because a strong result can meet the literacy and numeracy standard required for the VCE. We treat Year 9 NAPLAN preparation as a general secondary maths and English health check rather than a one-off.
NAPLAN preparation is available in small groups by year level from Term 4 through to the March test window, and one-to-one all year. Sessions run at our Truganina centre and online. Whichever you choose, the aim is a child who walks into the test knowing the format, having practised on a screen, and confident that the skills are there.

These are the topics our NAPLAN tutors cover, by year level, drawn from the curriculum-aligned question banks that power the free Skills Check.
One-to-one tutoring is $35–$45 an hour depending on the year level; small groups of up to five are from $25 an hour. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.
Term 4 of the previous year is ideal, which gives ten to twelve weeks before the March test window. Starting in February still helps, mainly with format familiarity and the writing task, but there is less time to fix underlying gaps.
No. We use NAPLAN-style questions, but the program is built from your child's Skills Check result and teaches the specific skills that are missing. A practice test on its own does not improve a result.
It should make it better. Most anxiety comes from not knowing what the test looks like. Once a student has seen the format, practised on a screen, and has a plan for the writing task, the fear usually drops noticeably.
Not directly; those exams have their own tests. But the skills overlap heavily, and a strong Year 5 NAPLAN result is a good indicator that a student is ready to prepare for scholarship or selective-entry exams.
Yes. Groups by year level (3, 5, 7, 9) run from Term 4 to March, at the Truganina centre and online, from $25 an hour. One-to-one is available all year.
