If you are looking for a selective entry & scholarship tutor in Derrimut, here is exactly what we do, what it costs and how to start. RHZ Tutoring is a small, local centre in Truganina; we are not a franchise and every tutor is local, works with a valid Working with Children Check and reports to you after every session.

How we tutor Selective Entry & Scholarship (Years 5–8)

Two different exams bring families to us for this tutoring. The Victorian selective-entry high school exam is sat in Year 8 for entry to Year 9 at Melbourne High, Mac.Robertson Girls', Nossal and Suzanne Cory, the last of which is in Werribee and draws heavily from Melbourne's west. Scholarship tests for independent and Catholic schools are usually sat in Year 6 for Year 7 entry, and sometimes in Year 8 or 10, and are run by testing agencies rather than the schools themselves.

Both kinds of exam test more than the school curriculum. They include reading comprehension, mathematics, verbal and numerical reasoning, and one or two writing tasks, all under tight time limits and pitched above the student's current year level. A capable student who has only ever done classwork will find the reasoning sections unfamiliar and the timing brutal. That is the gap our preparation closes.

We start with a free Skills Check at the top of the student's year level, then a diagnostic on reasoning-style questions, so we know whether the work needed is knowledge (maths topics the student has not yet met), technique (how to attack a verbal reasoning set) or speed. The program is then built around those needs: typically weekly sessions across two or three terms, with a mix of explicit teaching, timed practice sets and feedback on writing.

Writing is where preparation makes the biggest difference. Selective and scholarship writing tasks are short, timed, and marked for ideas, structure, vocabulary and control of language. We teach students a plan they can execute in the time available for both persuasive and creative prompts, and we mark every piece so the student learns to edit as they write. Maths preparation covers the curriculum above the student's year level, plus the problem-solving strategies (working backwards, drawing a diagram, looking for patterns) that reasoning sections reward.

We are honest with families about the odds. These exams are competitive and preparation improves a student's chances but does not guarantee a place. What it does guarantee is a student who is a year ahead in maths and English and who can write well under pressure, which pays off in Years 7 to 10 regardless of the result. Preparation is available one-to-one and in small groups, at the Truganina centre and online.

Selective Entry & Scholarship tutoring for Derrimut families

Derrimut is a newer residential pocket north of the industrial belt, and it is one of the quickest trips to our centre from outside Wyndham: Boundary Road runs almost door to door. Derrimut students go to a wide spread of secondary schools, so the free Skills Check is how we find out what has actually been covered before we plan sessions.

From Derrimut it is about 12 minutes to 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, straight along Boundary Road. Every subject is also available online with the same tutor, and many Derrimut families mix in-person and online across the week.

Schools our Derrimut students come from

We tutor Selective Entry & Scholarship students from Derrimut Primary School, Victoria University Secondary College, Deer Park North Primary School and Caroline Springs College and other local schools, so our tutors know the pace and the assessment styles used in Derrimut.

We also see Selective Entry & Scholarship students from neighbouring Deer Park, Caroline Springs, Truganina and Sunshine West.

What the exams test

How it works

1
Free Skills Check. Start with the free Skills Check: a short online diagnostic, done at home, that shows topic by topic where your child sits against their year level.
2
Free consultation. A tutor calls you for a free consultation, walks through the result and recommends a plan: 1:1 or small group, in person or online. No card, no lock-in.
3
Targeted sessions. Your child is matched with a Selective Entry & Scholarship tutor and sessions start, at the Truganina centre or online. After each session you receive a short note on what was covered and what is next.

Pricing

Small-group sessions (three to five students of a similar level) are from $25 an hour. One-to-one sessions are $35 to $45 an hour depending on year level, with VCE at the top of that range. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.

Frequently asked questions

When should my child start preparing?

For a Year 6 scholarship test, the start of Year 5 or the end of Year 4 is ideal. For the Year 8 selective-entry exam, starting in Year 7 gives time to cover the maths above year level and to practise the reasoning sections without cramming.

Which schools do the selective-entry exam cover?

Melbourne High School, Mac.Robertson Girls' High School, Nossal High School and Suzanne Cory High School. Students sit one exam and list their preferences.

Do you guarantee a place?

No, and no honest tutor can. These are competitive exams with limited places. We prepare students thoroughly and tell you frankly how they are tracking.

What is the difference between scholarship and selective-entry preparation?

Scholarship tests are usually sat in Year 6 and are pitched at Year 6 to 7 level; the selective-entry exam is sat in Year 8 and pitched at Year 8 to 9. The skill areas are similar, so a student who prepares for one is well placed for the other.

Is small-group preparation effective?

Yes, and many families prefer it: students practise timed sets together, which builds pace, and the cost is lower. Writing feedback is individual within the group.
