Truganina families ask us the same two questions about VCE Biology: is my child actually behind, and what will you do about it? The first is answered by our free Skills Check, the second by this page. We are a local centre at 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, rated 5.0 on Google, tutoring Units 1 to 4 in person and online.

How we tutor VCE Biology (Units 1–4)

Biology has a reputation as the memorising science, and that reputation is the reason many capable students underperform in it. The current study design rewards students who can apply concepts to unfamiliar scenarios, interpret experimental data and write precise, well-structured answers. Knowing the content is necessary but not sufficient; the skill is in the writing.

Unit 3 asks how cells maintain life: the structure and function of DNA, RNA and proteins, gene expression and regulation, DNA manipulation techniques including CRISPR-Cas9 and PCR, and the biochemical pathways of photosynthesis and cellular respiration along with the factors that affect them. Unit 4 asks how life changes and responds to challenges: the immune system, vaccination and immunotherapies, mutation, selection and speciation, and human evolution, plus a student-designed scientific investigation.

Our Biology tutoring teaches each topic in three passes: understand the mechanism (with diagrams and analogies), learn the exact terms the examiners look for, and practise exam-style questions with marking against the VCAA criteria. A typical session includes a short recall test on the previous topic, teaching of the current topic, and a set of written-answer questions that the tutor marks in front of the student, showing exactly where each mark was earned or lost.

Data-analysis and experimental-design questions appear throughout the Biology exam and are where many students lose marks. We teach students to identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables, to describe trends from graphs precisely, and to evaluate an experiment's validity and reliability using the right language. This also prepares them for the Unit 4 investigation.

VCE Biology is available one-to-one and in small groups of up to four, at our Truganina centre and online. Units 1 and 2 (cells, body systems, reproduction, genetics) are tutored in the same way, with the aim of building the vocabulary and study habits that make Units 3 and 4 manageable. From Term 3 of Year 12 we move to past VCAA exams and timed practice.

VCE Biology tutoring for Truganina families

Truganina has grown from paddocks to one of the busiest family suburbs in Wyndham in little more than a decade, and its schools have grown with it. Class sizes are large and year-level cohorts are big, which is exactly the setting where a quiet gap in a child's maths or reading can go unnoticed for a term or two.

Our centre is in Truganina itself: our centre is on Apex Drive, off Leakes Road, about four minutes from Tarneit station. If getting to Truganina is awkward on a given day, the same session can run online with the same tutor.

Schools our Truganina students come from

Our Truganina VCE Biology students attend schools including Truganina P-9 College, Truganina South Primary School, Truganina East Primary School, Garrang Wilam Primary School, Westbourne Grammar School and Al-Taqwa College. We are independent of all of them; we simply know what they teach and when.

We also see VCE Biology students from neighbouring Tarneit, Williams Landing, Hoppers Crossing and Laverton. See also our general tutoring page for Truganina.

How it works

1
Free Skills Check. Your child does the free online Skills Check (10–15 minutes) pitched at the top of their year level. You get a topic-by-topic report the same day.
2
Free consultation. We call you for a free consultation, go through the result together and suggest a starting point and a format. Nothing is charged until you decide to go ahead.
3
Targeted sessions. Sessions begin with a matched VCE Biology tutor who already teaches other Truganina students, with a plain-English progress note to you after every session.

Pricing

One-to-one tutoring is $35–$45 an hour depending on the year level; small groups of up to five are from $25 an hour. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.

Frequently asked questions

Is Biology easier than Chemistry or Physics?

It has less maths, but it is not easier to score highly in. Biology exams require long, precise written answers and application to new scenarios. Students who treat it as pure memorising usually plateau in the middle.

How do you help with memorising the content?

We use spaced recall: each session starts with a quick test on earlier topics, and the student builds a set of summary notes and flash cards across the year. By the exam the content has been revisited many times.

Can you help with the Unit 4 investigation and poster?

Yes, with understanding the method, analysing data and presenting the findings scientifically. The investigation must be the student's own work.

What do students find hardest in Biology?

Gene regulation and the immune system are the two topics that most often cause trouble, because they involve many interacting parts. We teach both as flowcharts and then practise applying them to unfamiliar examples.

Should my child take Biology in Year 11?

If they enjoyed Year 10 biology, are willing to read and write a lot, and want a science for health, medicine, nursing or environmental pathways, yes. If they find long written answers difficult, we can work on that in Year 10 before they commit.
