This page is for Point Cook parents weighing up VCE Specialist Maths tutoring for a child in Units 1 to 4. It covers how we teach the subject, the curriculum topics we work through, what Point Cook families can expect on travel and format, and our prices. The short version: start with the free Skills Check, and a tutor will call you.
Specialist Mathematics is the most demanding maths subject in the VCE, and it is taken alongside Methods, so students are effectively running two heavy maths courses at once. The students who thrive are the ones who are organised, who treat Methods fluency as a given, and who practise Specialist problems that require several techniques in sequence. Those are habits we build deliberately.
Our Specialist tutors have themselves completed Specialist with strong results or teach it, because the subject cannot be tutored from a textbook by someone who has not done it. The Units 3 and 4 course covers proof (including induction), rational and reciprocal functions, complex numbers in Cartesian and polar form, vectors in two and three dimensions, calculus (implicit differentiation, integration by substitution and parts, partial fractions, volumes of revolution, differential equations, kinematics) and statistical inference with confidence intervals and hypothesis tests.
Sessions are almost entirely problem-based. The tutor sets a problem, watches the student attempt it, and intervenes at the exact point where the technique or the reasoning breaks down. We put a lot of weight on presentation: Specialist examiners award marks for a clear chain of reasoning, correct notation and a justified final answer, and Exam 1 (no calculator, no notes) is where tidy working matters most. Exam 2 questions can run to a page and mix several areas of study, and we practise those in timed blocks from Term 2.
Units 1 and 2 Specialist vary by school but typically include proof and number, sequences, geometry and trigonometry, vectors, complex numbers and an introduction to statistics. We use Year 11 to build the algebraic stamina and the trigonometric identities that Units 3 and 4 assume, and to get the CAS fluent for the parts of the course where it helps.
Because there are fewer Specialist students in each school in the west, many of our Specialist students join us one-to-one or in a small group of two or three online, so they can be matched with a tutor at the right level rather than whoever is nearby. In-person sessions at our Truganina centre are available, and we run exam-preparation blocks in the September holidays.
Point Cook is the largest suburb in Wyndham by population and has an unusual school structure: most students attend a P-9 or K-9 college and then move to Point Cook Senior Secondary for Years 10 to 12. That means many Point Cook families first look for a tutor at the Year 9 to 10 changeover, when the VCE subject choices suddenly become real.
The drive from Point Cook (3030) to our centre at 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029 takes about 15 minutes, via Palmers Road and Sayers Road, or the Princes Freeway to Forsyth Road. If getting to Truganina is awkward on a given day, the same session can run online with the same tutor.
We tutor VCE Specialist Maths students from Point Cook Senior Secondary College, Alamanda K-9 College, Saltwater P-9 College and Carranballac P-9 College and other local schools, so our tutors know the pace and the assessment styles used in Point Cook.
Families from Williams Landing, Seabrook, Sanctuary Lakes and Altona Meadows use the same sessions, and small groups are formed by level, not by suburb. See also our general tutoring page for Point Cook.

The list below is what the free Skills Check assesses for VCE Specialist Maths, by year level, and therefore what a Point Cook student's sessions are planned from. A tutor will always step back a year when a foundation topic is missing.
One-to-one tutoring is $35–$45 an hour depending on the year level; small groups of up to five are from $25 an hour. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.
Specialist is one of the most highly scaled subjects, so a moderate raw score becomes a strong scaled score. But it is only worth it if the student is genuinely strong at Methods; a low Specialist score does not scale well enough to help.
Yes. Specialist Units 3 and 4 must be taken with, or after, Methods Units 3 and 4. The two subjects reinforce each other, and we often tutor a student in both.
Fluency: algebra, trigonometric identities, proof by induction and vectors. The Year 12 content assumes these are second nature, and the students who struggle in Unit 3 are usually the ones who left Year 11 with these still shaky.
Yes. Exam 1 is where most Specialist marks are lost. We practise hand techniques every session: exact values, integration by parts, complex number manipulation and differential equations, all with a focus on clean working.
Yes, and it works well because the tutor and student share worked solutions on screen. It also means a Specialist student in the west can be matched with a genuinely strong Specialist tutor regardless of location.
