NAPLAN reports a Year 3 result in four proficiency levels, and the difference between Developing and Strong is usually a handful of specific skills. A short orientation first. Year 3 fractions are unit fractions: halves, thirds, quarters, fifths and eighths of shapes and collections, placing fractions on a number line, counting by halves and quarters, and noticing that two quarters is the same as one half. The Victorian Curriculum wants equal parts to be understood before any symbols.
