NAPLAN Numeracy in Year 5 is adaptive, so a student who answers the early questions correctly is routed to harder ones. Decimals questions appear throughout, usually in a worded or diagram-based form that asks the student to choose the right idea before applying it. This page gives that idea a workout on its own so the student can see whether it holds up without the cover of easier questions around it.
Year 5 decimals go to thousandths: reading, comparing and ordering them, adding and subtracting decimals, multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000, rounding to a given place and converting between decimals and simple fractions. Money and measurement supply the contexts.
This topic sits inside the Victorian Curriculum for Year 5 NAPLAN Numeracy; the questions stay at the easy and at-level tiers so the result is a fair check of the foundations.
The distractors in this quiz are built from real misconceptions rather than random wrong numbers, so a specific wrong answer usually points to a specific gap. The ones we see most at Year 5:
None of these is a sign of low ability. Each is a reasonable idea that worked in an earlier year and needs replacing, which is exactly what a good explanation, or a tutor, does.
The habits that move decimals from shaky to secure at Year 5:
In the middle primary years, short frequent practice with immediate feedback works best. Mix a few fact questions with one worded problem and talk through any error.
Every set on this page is a seeded selection of 10 from the 13 decimals questions that pass our quality gate. A different seed gives a different set, and there are many more combinations than any one student will need. The correct answers never appear in the page source; the browser asks our server for them after you press Mark my answers.
Because every question here is on decimals, a low score is a clear signal and a high score is genuinely reassuring for this topic. What it cannot tell you is whether the other Year 5 NAPLAN Numeracy topics are equally secure, or how far above the year level the student can go; the free Skills Check covers both.
