What Year 5 students need to know about percentages

A short orientation first. Year 5 introduces percentages as parts per hundred: recognising 50%, 25%, 10% and 75% as benchmark amounts, linking them to the equivalent fractions and decimals, finding those simple percentages of a quantity, and reading percentages in charts and advertisements.

Per cent means out of every hundred, so 25% means 25 out of 100, or 25/100.
Benchmarks: 50% = 1/2 = 0.5, 25% = 1/4 = 0.25, 75% = 3/4 = 0.75, 10% = 1/10 = 0.1.
To find 50% of an amount halve it; for 25% halve it twice; for 10% divide by 10.
A percentage is a proportion, not a fixed amount: 50% of 8 is 4 but 50% of 200 is 100.
Percentages appear on sale signs, test scores and graphs; a full circle graph is 100%.
Worked example: Find 25% of 80. 25% is a quarter, so halve 80 to get 40, then halve again to get 20.
Common mistake: Answering 50 for 50% of any number. 50% means half, so 50% of 30 is 15.
Common mistake: Writing 25% as 2.5. Per cent means out of 100, so 25% is 25/100 = 0.25.
