Year 5 Writing & grammar notes: the key ideas

A one-page summary of writing and grammar at Year 5 level, written by RHZ tutors to the Victorian Curriculum. Read it before the quiz, or print it for revision.

A phrase is a group of words without a subject and verb (under the bridge); a clause has both.
Modality is how certain or forceful language is: might and could are low, should is medium, must and will are high.
Cohesive devices include text connectives (furthermore, in contrast), pronoun references and repeating key nouns across paragraphs.
Vary sentence structure on purpose: open with an adverb, a phrase or a subordinate clause rather than always the subject.
Punctuation for effect includes a dash for a sudden break, a colon to introduce, and a short sentence for impact.
Worked example: 'Slowly, under a heavy grey sky, the fishermen hauled in the net.' An adverb and a phrase come before the subject.
Common mistake: using high modality everywhere in persuasive writing so it sounds like shouting; mix must with should and could.
Common mistake: every sentence beginning with the subject (The boy... The boy... He...), which makes writing flat; vary the openers.

How to revise this: take one paragraph you wrote and rewrite it so no two sentences start the same way and one connective links each paragraph.
