How NAPLAN tests comprehension in Year 7

NAPLAN reports a Year 7 result in four proficiency levels, and the difference between Developing and Strong is usually a handful of specific skills. Comprehension is one of the areas where our tutors see that gap most often. What comprehension covers in Year 7 NAPLAN Reading & Language

Before the quiz, here is what the topic means at this level. Year 7 comprehension covers reading a range of literary and informative texts, identifying purpose and audience, inferring meaning, summarising and analysing how language choices shape meaning.

Every question on this page was written to a specific Victorian Curriculum reference for Year 7 and checked by an RHZ tutor before it could be served.

Where Year 7 students go wrong with comprehension

Most errors in comprehension are not random. When Year 7 students sit our Skills Check, the same handful of misunderstandings account for the majority of lost marks:

• The question is answered in general terms without reference to the text.
• Answers retell the text rather than analysing it.
• Inference is replaced by personal opinion.

Each of these is fixable in a session or two once it has been named, which is why the results panel below shows the correct answer and an explanation rather than just a score.

What to do if comprehension needs work

Three things a parent or student can do this week:

1. Write one-paragraph answers with a quote and an explanation.
2. Compare two texts on the same topic and note the differences in language.
3. Summarise a longer text in fifty words.

From Year 7, comprehension and writing improve fastest when students read widely and practise short, timed responses with a specific structure.

When he died, Mira found it on the table beside his chair — still ticking. She held it, listening. She did not know why, but she could not bring herself to put it down." The writer ends the passage with Mira unable to put the watch down. What does this detail most likely communicate about the watch's significance to Mira?

The watch has become a symbol of her connection to her grandfather, and letting it go feels like losing him again. The watch is so beautiful that Mira is admiring its craftsmanship. Mira wants to sell the watch and is calculating how much it might be worth. Mira is worried the watch will stop ticking if she sets it down on a hard surface.

Read this passage, then answer the question. "After the match, the coach gathered the team. 'We worked hard today,' he said. 'There were moments in the second half that showed real character.' He paused. 'But we know what we need to improve.' No one spoke. The players stared at the ground." Which statement best describes what the coach's speech implies about the result?

The team performed so well that the coach cannot think of anything specific to criticise. The team most likely lost or underperformed, as the coach focuses on effort and avoids praising the outcome. The coach is angry with the team for not following his instructions during the match. The team won easily because the coach praises their character and hard work.

Read this passage, then answer the question. "Jordan read the same sentence four times without understanding a word. The noise from the street outside, the smell of burnt toast, the argument two rooms away — all of it pressed in. He closed his textbook. He would try again later, he told himself. But later never came." What does the final sentence 'But later never came' most strongly imply about Jordan?

He was interrupted again before he had a chance to reopen his textbook. He decided that the subject was too difficult to ever understand. He kept putting off studying and did not return to it. He was so tired that he fell asleep immediately after closing the book.

Read this passage, then answer the question. "Every day after school, Callum walked past the empty block on Henderson Street. Weeds pushed through the cracked concrete, and a rusted fence leaned at the edge. One afternoon he stopped, looked at it for a long time, and then pulled out his notebook. He began to sketch." What does Callum's action of pulling out his notebook most likely suggest about him?

He is concerned about the state of the empty block. He feels inspired by what he sees and wants to capture it. He is a student who must draw things for a school assignment. He is bored and looking for something to do after school.

How to read a score out of 10

9 or 10 out of 10

The easy and at-level content is secure. The useful question now is how far above the year level the student can go, which a ten-item quiz cannot show. The free Skills Check adds stretch and challenge questions on every topic so you can see the ceiling as well as the floor.

7 or 8 out of 10

Solid, with one or two specific gaps. Look at which topic the incorrect answers came from (the results panel names the weakest topic) and spend a week on that topic before re-testing with a different seed.

5 or 6 out of 10

Some core ideas are shaky. The pattern matters more than the score: two misses in the same topic is a gap; misses scattered across topics usually means reading the question too fast. Either way, the Skills Check will tell you which.

4 or fewer out of 10

Foundations from an earlier year are probably missing, which is common and fixable. Try the quiz one year level down to confirm, then talk to a tutor about a short catch-up plan rather than more of the same practice.
