What this Year 7 NAPLAN Reading & Language quiz tests

NAPLAN assesses literacy in Year 7 through three tests: Reading (comprehension of literary and informative texts, inference and vocabulary in context), Conventions of Language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Writing (one persuasive or narrative task). This online practice quiz covers the first two through short passages and sentence-level questions drawn from Text response & analysis, Persuasive & creative writing, Comprehension and Vocabulary & grammar. Writing cannot be marked by a multiple-choice quiz, so treat this as a reading-and-language check and practise the writing task separately. In Year 7 the reading texts are longer and more abstract, and the language questions expect confident use of clauses, tense and punctuation for effect. The items sit at the easy and at-level tiers so a low score points to a specific gap.

Who it is for

It suits Year 7 students revising before a topic test or exam, parents who suspect a gap but cannot tell how big it is, and students at Victorian secondary colleges who want to check they are keeping pace with the NAPLAN course rather than just keeping up with the homework.

Topics in this quiz

Each set of ten is spread across these 4 areas and mixes easy and at-level questions. The stretch and challenge tiers are reserved for the free Skills Check, which is where a strong student's ceiling shows.

Question 1
Text response & analysis

Read: "Tom clenched his fists and stared at the ground, refusing to speak." What can you infer about Tom?

Question 2
Vocabulary & grammar

Read this pair of sentences from a student's creative writing: 'The light had gone. She locked the door.' The student wants to combine them into ONE sentence using a single subordinating conjunction that clearly shows the first event caused the second. Which version achieves this correctly?

Question 3
Persuasive & creative writing

What part of speech is "slowly"?

Question 4
Text response & analysis

"The wind whispered through the trees." Which technique is used?

Question 5
Text response & analysis

"Her smile was sunshine." Which technique?

Question 6
Comprehension

Read: "Volcanoes form where hot melted rock, called magma, rises to the surface. When a volcano erupts, magma becomes lava. Over time, layers of cooled lava build a mountain. Some volcanoes are active, while others are dormant and have not erupted for a long time." What builds up the mountain over time?

Question 7
Vocabulary & grammar

What part of speech is "beautiful"?

Question 8
Persuasive & creative writing

Read this opening to a persuasive speech: 'Every single day, thousands of Australians throw away food that could feed a family. Every single day, children go to bed hungry. Every single day, we do nothing.' What is the PRIMARY effect of repeating 'Every single day'?

Question 9
Comprehension

Read this passage, then answer the question. "Jordan read the same sentence four times without understanding a word. The noise from the street outside, the smell of burnt toast, the argument two rooms away — all of it pressed in. He closed his textbook. He would try again later, he told himself. But later never came." What does the final sentence 'But later never came' most strongly imply about Jordan?

Question 10
Comprehension

Read this passage, then answer the question. "A review of a local restaurant read: 'The pasta was cooked to perfection and the service was prompt. However, the dessert menu was limited and the music was far too loud for a conversation. We left satisfied, but not eager to return.'" What can the reader conclude about the reviewer's overall opinion of the restaurant?

How to read a score out of ten

9 or 10 out of 10
The easy and at-level content is secure. The useful question now is how far above the year level the student can go, which a ten-item quiz cannot show. The free Skills Check adds stretch and challenge questions on every topic so you can see the ceiling as well as the floor.
7 or 8 out of 10
Solid, with one or two specific gaps. Look at which topic the incorrect answers came from (the results panel names the weakest topic) and spend a week on that topic before re-testing with a different seed.
5 or 6 out of 10
Some core ideas are shaky. The pattern matters more than the score: two misses in the same topic is a gap; misses scattered across topics usually means reading the question too fast. Either way, the Skills Check will tell you which.
4 or fewer out of 10
Foundations from an earlier year are probably missing, which is common and fixable. Try the quiz one year level down to confirm, then talk to a tutor about a short catch-up plan rather than more of the same practice.

Why ten questions is a snapshot, not a diagnosis

A ten-item quiz can tell you whether the easy and at-level content is in place; it cannot tell you how a student copes with the multi-step, above-level questions that separate a Developing result from a Strong or Exceeding one, and it cannot see whether a wrong answer was a gap, a slip or a misreading. That is why every RHZ student starts with the free Skills Check instead: about fifteen minutes across every topic for the year, pitched at the top of the year level, scored on the server, and turned into a plain-English report that names the secure topics, the shaky ones and the recommended next step. A tutor then phones to walk through it. Use this page to get a quick pulse, and the Skills Check to decide what to do.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Year 7 NAPLAN Reading and Language quiz really free?

Yes. No sign-up, no email, no payment. You can take it as many times as you like; add ?seed= to the address or press "New set of questions" for a different ten. The full-length Skills Check is also free, but it asks for a parent email so we can send the report.

Where do the questions come from?

From RHZ Tutoring's own curriculum-aligned question banks, the same banks our tutors use in sessions and in the free Skills Check. Every question was written to a specific Victorian Curriculum reference, checked by a tutor and run through an automated quality gate before it can be served.

Are the answers marked online?

Yes. When you press "Mark my answers" the page fetches the answer key from our server and shows a score, the correct answer for each question, a short explanation where one exists, and the topic that needs the most work. Nothing is stored and nothing identifies your child.

Is the quiz the same every time?

No. The ten questions are chosen from a larger pool of easy and at-level items, spread across the Year 7 domains, and a different seed gives a different set. The default set on this page is fixed so that a shared link shows the same quiz.

How is this different from the Skills Check?

This quiz is ten questions at the easy and at-level tiers, marked instantly, with no report. The free Skills Check is about 15 minutes, covers every topic for the year, includes stretch and challenge questions pitched at the top of the year, and produces a same-day topic-by-topic report that a tutor walks you through. Use this page for a quick pulse; use the Skills Check to decide what to do next.
