Parents comparing tutors run into three very different price structures, and the hourly rate on its own hides most of the difference. A private tutor (a university student, a teacher tutoring after hours, or a full-time independent) commonly charges $40 to $90 an hour for one-to-one sessions, with VCE and specialist subjects at the top of the range and primary at the bottom. Large tutoring centres and franchises commonly charge $50 to $100 an hour or more, often billed as a term or a package in advance, sometimes with an enrolment or assessment fee on top. Online marketplaces sit across both ranges and add a platform commission. Treat every figure on this page as a typical range for the Melbourne market, not a quote: the right comparison is what a specific tutor charges for a specific session length, and whether preparation, marking and progress notes are included.
RHZ Tutoring's pricing is simpler than most. Small-group sessions of three to five students at a similar level are from $25 an hour. One-to-one sessions are $35 to $45 an hour depending on year level, with VCE at the top of that range. Online sessions cost the same as in-person sessions at our Truganina centre. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, there is no lock-in and the Skills Check and the first consultation are free. That puts a weekly one-hour VCE session in a small group at about $250 a term, and a weekly one-to-one VCE session at about $450 a term, against a typical market figure of $500 to $1,000 a term for the same one-to-one hour elsewhere.
Small group is the best value for most students who are broadly on track and want consistency: the tutor works through the same topics the school is covering, everyone attempts the questions, and the group is small enough that nobody hides. It suits primary and Years 7 to 10 particularly well, and it suits VCE students who mainly need structured practice and marked work.
One-to-one earns its higher rate when the gap is specific and urgent: a Year 9 student who has lost the thread in algebra, a Year 12 student four weeks from the Methods exam with a clear list of weak topics, or a child who will not ask a question in front of others. Progress per hour is faster, so it often needs fewer weeks.
Online is the same tutor, the same material and (at RHZ) the same price, delivered over a shared whiteboard. It removes the drive and opens the whole of Australia; the trade-off is that younger children generally concentrate better in the room, so we recommend in-person for Prep to Year 4 where the family can get to Truganina.
One session a week is the norm and, for a student who is close to where they should be, it is enough: the session sets the practice and the student does it between sessions. Two sessions a week is sensible for a VCE student in the final term, for a student who is more than a year behind, or when exams are within six weeks. More than two a week rarely helps unless the tutor is also managing the student's homework and practice, because the limiting factor becomes time to consolidate, not time being taught. If the budget only stretches to a single hour, spend it on the subject that is furthest behind or the one that counts most, and use the free practice quizzes and practice papers for the rest.
