The tutor and student share a digital whiteboard so working is visible to both, the tutor can see the student write in real time (a phone or document camera pointed at the page works well for maths), and materials are sent in advance so there is no scrambling. For English, the student writes in a shared document and the tutor marks it live. For VCE sciences and maths, worked solutions and calculator screens are shared directly.
Online suits some students better than in person. Students who are shy in a room often participate more from home. Senior students save the travel time and use it for study. Families with a child in Year 3 and another in Year 10 can run both sessions back-to-back without a second trip. And for VCE subjects with few students at a school, like Specialist Maths or Physics, online lets us match the student to the best tutor rather than the nearest.
It does not suit everyone. Very young students (Prep to Year 1) usually do better in person, where the tutor can hear them read and handle counters and cards. We send a link before each session, keep a record of what was covered, and the tutor can share the session's working with you afterwards. Small-group online sessions are capped at four so every student gets attention.
