Brisbane families most often come to us for English, because it is the subject where a gap shows up first and compounds fastest. Here is how our online English tutoring (Prep–Year 10) works in Brisbane: the teaching approach, the topics, the Queensland context, local session times, pricing and answers to common questions.
Brisbane is growing quickly, with the run-up to 2032 adding to a population already spread from Caboolture to Logan and out to Ipswich. Queensland's schooling has its own shape: Year 7 has been in high school since 2015, there is no statewide selective test, and the QCE combines internal assessment with external exams.
English is harder to tutor well than maths because the gaps are less visible. A child can read fluently and still not comprehend; a student can write a long essay that never answers the question. Our free Skills Check for English looks separately at comprehension, spelling and phonics, grammar and writing, so the tutor knows on day one whether the problem is decoding, understanding, expressing or organising. The Australian Curriculum's three strands (language, literature and literacy) are the same in every state, so the plan we build is the plan the school would recognise.
In the early years the focus is systematic phonics and fluency: sound-letter knowledge, blending, high-frequency words and reading aloud with expression, which the tutor hears every session over video. From Year 3 the balance shifts to comprehension and writing: finding evidence in a text, inferring, summarising, and writing paragraphs with a clear topic sentence. By Years 5 and 6 we are working on structured persuasive and narrative writing, the two genres NAPLAN assesses, and on the vocabulary and sentence variety that separate a good piece from an average one.
In secondary English the curriculum expects students to analyse how authors construct meaning and how writers build an argument. That is a big jump from primary, and many Year 7 and 8 students are still retelling the plot rather than analysing it. Our tutors teach a simple, explicit structure for analytical paragraphs (point, evidence, explanation of the author's technique, link back to the question), then practise it on the texts the school has actually set. Persuasive writing gets the same treatment: contention, arguments, evidence, rebuttal and language techniques.
Online sessions are built around writing, not just talking about writing. The student writes in a shared document, the tutor marks it live against the criteria a teacher would use, and the weakest part is rewritten in the session. A typical hour includes a short comprehension or vocabulary task, one focused teaching point (embedding quotations, say, or using a semicolon correctly), a piece of writing, and immediate feedback. Students keep a running list of their own recurring errors, which shrinks over the term.
For students who speak another language at home, or who read well below their year level, we slow down and go back to the mechanics: sentence structure, tense, articles and prepositions, and lots of guided reading. For strong students we extend into scholarship-style and selective-test writing and the Year 10 analytical work that every state's senior English course assumes.

Start with the curriculum. Every state's Prep to Year 10 maths, English and science syllabus is built on the Australian Curriculum (version 9), and Queensland is no exception, so the content a Year 8 student in Brisbane is doing this term is the content our tutors teach every day. Names differ (Foundation here, Prep there; a NESA or SCSA document rather than a Victorian one) but the sequence does not, and the tutor confirms the school's current unit in the first session.
The second reason is the free online Skills Check, which no local centre in Brisbane offers in this form. It is pitched at the top of the child's year level, drawn from a bank of 5,900 questions across Prep to Year 12, and produces a topic-by-topic report the same day. Instead of an enrolment chat and a generic placement test, you get a specific list: these topics are secure, these are shaky, these earlier-year skills are missing. A tutor then calls you for a free consultation to walk through it, and the first paid session is teaching rather than diagnosing.
Third, convenience without compromise. Families in Brisbane are not short of tutoring options; they are short of time. An online session at 4:30pm needs no pick-up and no parking, the tutor is the same every week, and materials arrive in advance so the hour is spent teaching. Small groups are capped at four and formed by year level, so a Brisbane student works with peers at the same level wherever they happen to live.
Then there is price. Small online groups are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour depending on year level, the same as our Melbourne families pay, with no lock-in and a free Skills Check and consultation first. We would rather you compare that against what a local centre in Brisbane quotes for the same hour than take our word for it.
Brisbane families like online tutoring for the same reasons Sydney families do (no traffic, no pick-up, the same tutor every week), with the bonus that the Melbourne time difference is zero for most of the year and only an hour in summer.
Because NAPLAN is set nationally, a Brisbane student in Year 3, 5, 7 or 9 sits precisely the test our Melbourne students sit, in the same March window, on the same screen-based adaptive format. We prepare for it the same way everywhere: a Skills Check to find the domain and the skills that need work, a short program that teaches them, then NAPLAN-style questions to check they have stuck. Writing, where a single task carries the most marks, gets a plan for both the persuasive and the narrative prompt.
Queensland does not run a statewide selective test. The selective-entry options are the Queensland Academies (science, mathematics and technology in Brisbane; health sciences on the Gold Coast; creative industries in Brisbane), academic-merit entry at Brisbane State High School, and the scholarship and extension programs individual state and independent schools run with their own testing. For all of them the preparation is what it is for a scholarship exam anywhere: reading, maths above year level, reasoning and timed writing.
Years 11 and 12 in Queensland lead to the QCE: General subjects combine school-based internal assessments with an external examination set by the QCAA, and results feed the ATAR through QTAC. RHZ tutors the QCE the way we tutor every non-Victorian senior certificate: we support the underlying maths, English and science skills and the study technique a Year 11 or 12 student needs, but we do not claim QCE syllabus or school-assessment expertise. In practice that means a Year 11 student in Brisbane can use us for the algebra, calculus and problem-solving that every senior maths course rests on, the analytical and persuasive writing every senior English course assesses, the chemistry, physics and biology concepts and the way to write a scientific explanation, and the habits of planning, note-making and timed practice. What we will not do is pretend to know your school's assessment program better than the teacher who wrote it.
Our material lines up with what is taught at Brisbane State High School, Brisbane Grammar School, Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology and Brisbane Girls Grammar School and every other school in Brisbane for Prep to Year 10, because all of them plan from the same Australian Curriculum content. Brisbane is the same time as Melbourne while Melbourne is on AEST (April to early October) and 1 hour behind Melbourne once Melbourne moves to AEDT: a 4pm session booked in Melbourne time is 4pm in Brisbane in winter and 3pm in the southern summer. Brisbane is on AEST all year (Queensland does not observe daylight saving).

We book in your local time, confirm the Melbourne equivalent in writing, and adjust automatically when Melbourne changes clocks in October and April. All a student needs is a laptop or tablet with a camera, a stable connection and a quiet spot; for maths, a phone pointed at the page lets the tutor watch the working.
The Skills Check is free, online, and works in Brisbane exactly as it does in Truganina. Your child does 10 to 15 minutes of questions pitched at the top of their year level, drawn from a 5,900-question bank covering Prep to Year 12, and you receive a topic-by-topic report the same day. A tutor then calls you for a free consultation to walk through it. Many families run it in Term 4 to plan the next year, and again before NAPLAN or a selective test.
There is no card and no commitment. If the result shows your child is on track, we will say so; if it shows a gap, we will tell you exactly which topics and suggest a plan.
One-to-one online tutoring is $35–$45 an hour by year level; small online groups of up to four are from $25 an hour. Prices are the same as for families who come to our Melbourne centre; there is no interstate surcharge. Yes. Send us the text and the essay topic and the tutor will work on that. We deliberately practise analysis on the school's set text so the improvement shows up in the next assessment, whichever state the school is in.
Very. Reading and writing are related but separate skills, and writing has to be taught explicitly: how to plan, how to structure a paragraph, how to vary sentences, how to edit. Most of our English work with strong readers is on writing, done live in a shared document.
From Year 2 or 3 it works well: the tutor hears the child read over video and marks writing in a shared document. For Foundation and Year 1 we are honest that a child needs a parent nearby for the first few sessions, and we keep them short.
For Prep to Year 10, yes in substance: Queensland's syllabus is built on the Australian Curriculum, the same as Victoria's, and our tutors work from the school's current unit. For Years 11 and 12 we are honest: we support the maths, English and science skills and the study technique a QCE student needs, but we do not claim QCE syllabus or school-assessment expertise, and we will say so if a subject is outside what we can help with.

For Prep to Year 10, yes in content and sequence. Each state publishes its own version (NESA syllabuses in New South Wales, the SCSA curriculum in Western Australia, the Victorian Curriculum in Victoria) but all are built on the Australian Curriculum version 9, so a Year 5 child in Brisbane is doing the same fractions, decimals and measurement as a Year 5 child in Melbourne. Years 11 and 12 are where the states genuinely differ.
