The Gold Coast is Australia's largest non-capital city and one of its fastest-growing, with big state high schools, a strong independent sector along the coast, and a Queensland Academy (health sciences) at Southport. Families move here from every other state, which means children arrive mid-year from a different curriculum sequence more often than anywhere else.
NAPLAN is the one assessment that is identical in every state: the same online, adaptive test sat in March by every student in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, reported since 2023 in four proficiency levels (Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support). Because it is national, a Melbourne tutor prepares a child anywhere in Australia for exactly the test that child will sit. Parents everywhere tell us the results came as a surprise, in both directions; our approach is to remove the surprise with a free Skills Check in Term 4 or early Term 1 that shows which NAPLAN domain, and which skills within it, need work.
We do not run NAPLAN as a practice-test factory. Practice tests tell you what a child got wrong; they do not teach the skill. We use the Skills Check result to build a short program, usually six to ten weeks, that teaches the missing skills directly and then uses NAPLAN-style questions to check they have stuck. For Numeracy that is typically place value, fractions, measurement conversions and reading graphs; for Reading it is inference and vocabulary in context; for Conventions it is apostrophes, commas, homophones and subject-verb agreement.
Writing is the domain with the most marks riding on a single task and the one where teaching makes the biggest difference. Students get either a persuasive or a narrative prompt and do not know which until the day. We teach a plan for each: for persuasive, a clear contention, three developed arguments with evidence and a rebuttal; for narrative, a short orientation, one complication handled well, and a resolution with a change in the character. We mark to the NAPLAN writing criteria so students learn where the marks actually are, and online the writing is done in a shared document and marked live.
For Year 7 and Year 9 students, Numeracy includes a calculator section and questions that assume the algebra and geometry of the previous two years, so we treat Year 7 and 9 preparation as a general secondary maths and English health check rather than a one-off. In Western Australia a Band 8 Year 9 result also pre-qualifies a student for the WACE literacy and numeracy standard, which raises the stakes for Perth families in particular.
NAPLAN preparation runs online in small groups by year level from Term 4 through to the March test window, and one-to-one all year, at the same prices as every other subject. The aim is a child who walks into the test knowing the format, having practised on a screen (which is how NAPLAN is now sat), and confident the skills are there.

The first reason is that the curriculum is national. Prep to Year 10 maths, English and science in Queensland follow a syllabus built on the Australian Curriculum (version 9), the same document Victoria's curriculum and every other state's is built on. The strands, the content and the order are the same: fractions in Year 3, algebra from Year 7, quadratics in Year 10. A tutor in Melbourne can plan a session for a child on the Gold Coast and be confident it lines up with the school, and the tutor checks the school's current unit in the first session so nothing is out of step.
The second is diagnosis. Before anyone is charged anything, the child does the free online Skills Check: 10 to 15 minutes pitched at the top of their year level, from a 5,900-question bank covering Prep to Year 12, with a same-day topic-by-topic report. Families on the Gold Coast tell us it is the first time anyone has shown them exactly where the gaps are rather than telling them the child is 'a bit behind'. The third reason is practical. Gold Coast has plenty of tutoring centres, and most of them involve a drive at the worst time of day, a fixed timetable and a waiting list for the good tutors. Online sessions run at the kitchen table at a slot that fits after school or sport, with the same tutor every week, and a small online group is formed by year level and need rather than by whoever walked into a particular centre that term.
Finally, cost. Because sessions are online and our overheads are one small centre in Melbourne, small groups are from $25 an hour and one-to-one $35 to $45 an hour for families on the Gold Coast, with monthly plans you can pause or cancel. Queensland does not run a statewide selective test. The selective-entry options are the Queensland Academies (science, mathematics and technology in Brisbane; health sciences on the Gold Coast; creative industries in Brisbane), academic-merit entry at Brisbane State High School, and the scholarship and extension programs individual state and independent schools run with their own testing. For all of them the preparation is what it is for a scholarship exam anywhere: reading, maths above year level, reasoning and timed writing.
Years 11 and 12 in Queensland lead to the QCE: General subjects combine school-based internal assessments with an external examination set by the QCAA, and results feed the ATAR through QTAC. RHZ tutors the QCE the way we tutor every non-Victorian senior certificate: we support the underlying maths, English and science skills and the study technique a Year 11 or 12 student needs, but we do not claim QCE syllabus or school-assessment expertise. In practice that means a Year 11 student on the Gold Coast can use us for the algebra, calculus and problem-solving that every senior maths course rests on, the analytical and persuasive writing every senior English course assesses, the chemistry, physics and biology concepts and the way to write a scientific explanation, and the habits of planning, note-making and timed practice. What we will not do is pretend to know your school's assessment program better than the teacher who wrote it.

We book in your local time, confirm the Melbourne equivalent in writing, and adjust automatically when Melbourne changes clocks in October and April. For a family on the Gold Coast the free Skills Check does three jobs. It shows where your child sits against their year level, topic by topic, in a way a school report never quite does. Yes. NAPLAN is set nationally by ACARA and sat online in the same March window by every Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 student in Australia, so preparation from Melbourne is preparation for exactly the test your child will sit.
Term 4 of the previous year is ideal, which gives ten to twelve weeks before the March test window. Starting in February still helps, mainly with format familiarity and the writing task, but there is less time to fix underlying gaps.
No. We use NAPLAN-style questions, but the program is built from your child's Skills Check result and teaches the specific skills that are missing. A practice test on its own does not improve a result.
For Prep to Year 10, yes in substance: Queensland's syllabus is built on the Australian Curriculum, the same as Victoria's, and our tutors work from the school's current unit. For Years 11 and 12 we are honest: we support the maths, English and science skills and the study technique a QCE student needs, but we do not claim QCE syllabus or school-assessment expertise, and we will say so if a subject is outside what we can help with.

For Prep to Year 10, yes in content and sequence. Each state publishes its own version (NESA syllabuses in New South Wales, the SCSA curriculum in Western Australia, the Victorian Curriculum in Victoria) but all are built on the Australian Curriculum version 9, so a Year 5 child on the Gold Coast is doing the same fractions, decimals and measurement as a Year 5 child in Melbourne. Years 11 and 12 are where the states genuinely differ.
