RHZ Tutoring has been tutoring VCE Chemistry for families across Wyndham and the west from our Truganina centre, and Wyndham Vale is one of the suburbs we see most. Below is how our VCE Chemistry tutoring works for Units 1 to 4, the topics we cover, and the practical details for Wyndham Vale families.

How we tutor VCE Chemistry (Units 1–4)

VCE Chemistry is a course of two halves: a calculation-heavy half (stoichiometry, gas laws, thermochemistry, electrochemistry, equilibrium constants) and an explanation-heavy half (bonding, organic reaction pathways, spectroscopy, equilibrium shifts). Most students are stronger at one than the other, and the free Skills Check plus a look at the last SAC usually tells us which. Our tutoring then targets the weaker half without letting the stronger half slip.

For the calculation side we drill the method: write the balanced equation, find the limiting reagent, convert to moles, use the ratio, convert back, check units and significant figures. Students who can do this reliably under time pressure pick up marks that others leave on the table. Electrochemistry and equilibrium are taught with a lot of attention to the wording examiners use, because a correct calculation with a poorly worded explanation still loses marks.

For the explanation side we teach students to answer the question asked, at the depth the marks require. A three-mark question on why an equilibrium shifts needs the stress, the direction of the shift and the reason, not a paragraph on Le Chatelier. Organic chemistry is taught as a map: functional groups, naming, and the reaction pathways between them, practised until the student can go from a starting molecule to a target in a few steps. Spectroscopy (IR, mass spectrometry, NMR) is taught as pattern recognition with plenty of practice.

Units 1 and 2 are where the foundations are set: atomic structure, bonding, the mole, solution concentration, acids and bases, and the analytical techniques that recur in Unit 4. Students who skip over the mole concept in Year 11 pay for it all through Unit 3. Our Year 11 sessions make sure the quantitative work is secure and the CAS or scientific calculator is used efficiently.

Chemistry tutoring is available one-to-one and in small groups of two to four, at our Truganina centre and online. Our tutors are Chemistry graduates or science teachers who follow the current study design. From Term 3 of Year 12 we move to full past-exam practice, marked against the VCAA examiner reports, with a focus on the multi-part extended questions that separate the top study scores.

VCE Chemistry tutoring for Wyndham Vale families

Wyndham Vale sits on the western edge of Wyndham and is still building out, with new estates feeding into a small number of very large schools. Wyndham Vale families are evenly split between driving to the Truganina centre and choosing online sessions, and we are happy to mix the two across a week.

From Wyndham Vale it is about 15 minutes to 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, via Ballan Road and Leakes Road, or the train to Tarneit. Every subject is also available online with the same tutor, and many Wyndham Vale families mix in-person and online across the week.

Schools our Wyndham Vale students come from

Our Wyndham Vale VCE Chemistry students attend schools including Wyndham Vale Primary School, Iramoo Primary School, Manor Lakes P-12 College, Wyndham Central College and Thomas Chirnside Primary School. We are independent of all of them; we simply know what they teach and when.

We also see VCE Chemistry students from neighbouring Tarneit, Manor Lakes, Werribee and Truganina. See also our general tutoring page for Wyndham Vale.

Curriculum topics we cover in VCE Chemistry

Every Wyndham Vale student's program is built from the Skills Check result, drawn from these year-by-year topics. If your child's school is on a different sequence, the tutor follows the school and uses this list to check nothing has been skipped.

How it works

1
Free Skills Check. Start with the free Skills Check: a short online diagnostic, done at home, that shows topic by topic where your child sits against their year level.
2
Free consultation. A tutor calls you for a free consultation, walks through the result and recommends a plan: 1:1 or small group, in person or online. No card, no lock-in.
3
Targeted sessions. Your child is matched with a VCE Chemistry tutor and sessions start, at the Truganina centre or online. After each session you receive a short note on what was covered and what is next.

Pricing

Small-group sessions (three to five students of a similar level) are from $25 an hour. One-to-one sessions are $35 to $45 an hour depending on year level, with VCE at the top of that range. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.

Frequently asked questions

Is Chemistry very mathematical?

Moderately. You need confident algebra, unit conversions, scientific notation and logarithms (for pH). Most students who did Year 10 maths comfortably are fine; we cover the maths in context when needed.

Which parts of Chemistry do students find hardest?

Equilibrium and electrochemistry in Unit 3, and organic reaction pathways and spectroscopy in Unit 4. We spend extra time on all four, with structured practice rather than re-reading notes.

Can you help with the Unit 4 practical investigation?

We help students understand the method, analyse their data and write the poster or report scientifically. The investigation itself must be the student's own work.

Do you use past VCAA exams?

Yes, from mid Unit 3 onwards. We also use the examiner reports, which tell you exactly where most students lost marks and what the assessors wanted to see.

Should my child do Chemistry and Physics or Chemistry and Biology?

It depends on the goal. Medicine and health science pathways often favour Chemistry with Biology; engineering favours Chemistry with Physics and Methods. We will talk through it with you honestly based on the Year 10 results.
