How to Choose a Tutoring Centre in Melbourne's West (Truganina, Tarneit, Point Cook)

Truganina, Tarneit, Point Cook, Werribee and Hoppers Crossing are among the fastest-growing suburbs in Australia, and tutoring has grown with them: franchise centres in the shopping precincts, small independent centres in business parks and converted houses, private tutors advertising on community groups, and online platforms that reach anywhere. That choice is good for families and hard to navigate, because the marketing all sounds the same. This guide is written by a tutoring centre, so read it with that in mind; we have tried to keep it fair, to describe the models rather than name competitors, and to say plainly what we do and do not offer so you can compare like with like.

Ten questions to ask any tutoring centre

1. Is there a diagnostic before enrolment, and what does it cover? A centre that starts teaching before it has found out what the student cannot do is guessing. Ask whether the assessment covers the whole year level or a sample, whether you see the results topic by topic, and whether it costs money. A paid "placement test" that feeds a sales conversation is a different thing from a free diagnostic whose report you keep.
2. Does every tutor hold a current Working With Children Check? Non-negotiable in Victoria for anyone working with under-18s. Ask to see the card or the number and check it on the Victorian WWCC register. A centre that hesitates is a centre to leave.
3. What is the real group size? Ask for the maximum and the typical, and how students are matched: by year level, by level within the year, or by whoever is available at that time. "Small group" is not a regulated term and can mean twelve.
4. How and how often will you report progress? The minimum is a short note after each session: what was covered, what the student can now do, what is next. Without that you are relying on the student's own account and an invoice.
5. Is there a lock-in, and what happens if we stop? Term packages paid in advance are common. Ask what is refunded if the student stops after three weeks, if a session is missed, and if the centre cancels.
6. What is the all-in price per hour? Take the hourly rate and add the enrolment fee, assessment fee, materials fee, and any charge for reports or holiday programs, then divide by the hours you will actually get. Compare that number, not the headline.
7. Who actually teaches the sessions? The person you meet at enrolment may not be the tutor. Ask about the tutor's qualifications and experience with the specific year level and subject, and whether the student keeps the same tutor across the term.
8. Is the material aligned to the Victorian Curriculum and the VCE study designs? Generic workbooks and imported programs can be well made and still not match what the school is teaching this term. Ask to see a sample for your child's year level.
9. Is there an online option, and is it the same tutor and price? Useful for sick days, holidays and families splitting time between two homes. Ask whether online sessions use a shared whiteboard and whether work is sent between sessions.
10. What is the cancellation policy for a single session? A missed session is where most families first feel the terms. Ask how much notice is needed and whether a make-up session is offered.

The models compared

Price bands are typical ranges observed in the Melbourne market, not quotes, and individual providers in each category vary widely. Large franchise networks (Kumon is the best-known example) run on their own structured programs and pricing; the row describes the category in general terms, not any one business. Red flags

• The assessment ends in a sales pitch rather than a report you can keep. A diagnostic exists to inform the parent, not to generate urgency.
• Guaranteed results. Nobody can guarantee a study score, an ATAR, or a selective-entry place. A centre that does is either not going to be there when it fails or is selecting who it enrols.
• You cannot see a session or meet the tutor before paying. Any reasonable centre will let you observe or trial.
• The contract is longer than the goal. If the child needs a term of fractions, a twelve-month contract is the wrong shape.
• Homework volume as a proxy for quality. Worksheets for their own sake keep children busy and parents reassured, but the question is whether the work is targeted at what the diagnostic found.
• No premises, no ABN, no WWCC. For an in-person centre all three should be visible.
• Reviews that are all five stars, all recent, all short. Read the detailed ones and look for parents describing a specific change.

What RHZ does, transparently

What we do not do: we do not run a large-scale program with hundreds of students, we do not offer every subject at every level (languages and humanities are limited), and we will say at the free consultation if we think tutoring is not the right answer for a child, because it sometimes is not.

Which model suits which family

A private tutor is the right choice when you already know the exact gap, you have a recommendation you trust, and you are comfortable managing the relationship yourself. An online marketplace suits a confident older student in a subject with few local tutors. A large franchise suits families who want a highly structured, long-running program and are happy with the commitment that comes with it. A small local centre is the middle path: a diagnostic, a matched group, a tutor who knows the local schools, and terms you can leave. Whichever you choose, the two things that predict whether tutoring works are the same: a diagnosis before the first session, and work happening between sessions.
