If you are looking for a english tutor in Seabrook, here is exactly what we do, what it costs and how to start. RHZ Tutoring is a small, local centre in Truganina; we are not a franchise and every tutor is local, works with a valid Working with Children Check and reports to you after every session.

How we tutor English (Prep–Year 10)

English is harder to tutor well than maths because the gaps are less visible. A child can read fluently and still not comprehend; a student can write a long essay that never actually answers the question. Our free Skills Check for English looks separately at comprehension, spelling and phonics, grammar and writing, so the tutor knows on day one whether the problem is decoding, understanding, expressing or organising.

In the early years (Prep to Year 2) our focus is systematic phonics and fluency: sound-letter knowledge, blending, high-frequency words and reading aloud with expression. From Year 3 the balance shifts to comprehension and writing: finding evidence in a text, inferring, summarising, and writing paragraphs with a clear topic sentence. By Years 5 and 6 we are working on structured persuasive and narrative writing, the two genres NAPLAN assesses, and on the vocabulary and sentence variety that separate a good piece from an average one.

In secondary English the Victorian Curriculum expects students to analyse how authors construct meaning and how writers build an argument. That is a big jump from primary, and many Year 7 and 8 students we meet are still retelling the plot rather than analysing it. Our tutors teach a simple, explicit structure for analytical paragraphs (point, evidence, explanation of the author's technique, link back to the question), then practise it on the actual texts the school has set. Persuasive writing gets the same treatment: contention, arguments, evidence, rebuttal and language techniques.

Sessions are built around writing, not just talking about writing. A typical hour includes a short comprehension or vocabulary task, a focused teaching point (for example, embedding quotations, or using a semicolon correctly), a piece of writing done in the session, and immediate marking against the criteria a teacher would use. Students keep a running list of their own recurring errors, which shrinks over the term.

For students who speak another language at home, or who read well below their year level, we slow down and go back to the mechanics: sentence structure, tense, articles and prepositions, and lots of guided reading. For strong students we extend into scholarship-style writing and Year 10 texts that lead into VCE. Whichever end your child is at, you get a progress note after every session with a specific next step.

English tutoring for Seabrook families

Seabrook is a small, settled suburb wedged between Point Cook and Altona Meadows. Most Seabrook children go to Seabrook Primary and then to Point Cook Senior, Laverton P-12 or a private school, so we tend to meet Seabrook families around Years 5 and 6 (NAPLAN, scholarship tests) and again in Year 10.

From Seabrook it is about 15 minutes to 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, via Point Cook Road and Dohertys Road. Every subject is also available online with the same tutor, and many Seabrook families mix in-person and online across the week.

Schools our Seabrook students come from

Students from Seabrook Primary School, Altona Meadows Primary School, Point Cook Senior Secondary College, Laverton P-12 College and Carranballac P-9 College come to us for English, which means the tutor usually recognises the school's sequence and the way it tests.

We also see English students from neighbouring Altona Meadows, Point Cook, Laverton and Williams Landing.

Curriculum topics we cover in English

Every Seabrook student's program is built from the Skills Check result, drawn from these year-by-year topics. If your child's school is on a different sequence, the tutor follows the school and uses this list to check nothing has been skipped.

Victorian Curriculum English strands we work across

How it works

1
Free Skills Check. Start with the free Skills Check: a short online diagnostic, done at home, that shows topic by topic where your child sits against their year level.
2
Free consultation. A tutor calls you for a free consultation, walks through the result and recommends a plan: 1:1 or small group, in person or online. No card, no lock-in.
3
Targeted sessions. Your child is matched with a English tutor and sessions start, at the Truganina centre or online. After each session you receive a short note on what was covered and what is next.

Pricing

Small-group sessions (three to five students of a similar level) are from $25 an hour. One-to-one sessions are $35 to $45 an hour depending on year level, with VCE at the top of that range. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.

Frequently asked questions

My child reads a lot but their writing is weak. Is that normal?

Very. Reading and writing are related but separate skills, and writing has to be taught explicitly: how to plan, how to structure a paragraph, how to vary sentences, how to edit. Most of our English work with strong readers is on writing.

Can you help with the books my child is studying at school?

Yes. Bring the text and the essay topic and the tutor will work on that. We deliberately practise analysis on the school's set text so the improvement shows up in the next assessment.

Do you teach spelling and grammar, or is it all essays?

Both. Primary sessions include spelling patterns, phonics and grammar every week. Secondary sessions include grammar and punctuation in context: we mark the student's own writing and teach the rule where the error shows up.

How long before we see an improvement in writing?

Structural improvements (paragraphing, answering the question) usually show within four to six sessions. Vocabulary, sentence variety and spelling improve more gradually and depend on reading at home, which we set as part of the homework.

Is English tutoring available in a small group?

Yes, for Years 3 to 10. Groups are capped at five and grouped by year level and need. Prep to Year 2 reading is best done one-to-one so the tutor can hear the child read every session.
