Seabrook families ask us the same two questions about VCE General Maths: is my child actually behind, and what will you do about it? The first is answered by our free Skills Check, the second by this page. We are a local centre at 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, rated 5.0 on Google, tutoring Units 1 to 4 in person and online.
General Mathematics is sometimes treated as the easy option, and that is a mistake that costs students a lot of study score. The content is more accessible than Methods, but the exams are dense, the questions are worded and contextual, and marks are lost on interpretation, rounding and calculator procedure rather than on hard maths. A student who takes General seriously can achieve a very strong score; one who coasts usually gets a surprise in the mid-year SAC.
The Units 3 and 4 course has four areas of study: data analysis, recursion and financial modelling, matrices, and networks and decision mathematics. Data analysis is the largest and includes the statistical language (five-number summaries, boxplots, correlation, least-squares regression, residuals, seasonal indices) that students must use precisely in written answers. Financial modelling relies on recurrence relations and the calculator's Finance Solver, and small input errors are the biggest single cause of lost marks in that section.
Our General Maths tutoring is built around exactly those pressure points. Each session includes calculator practice on the models students find hardest (TVM Solver, regression, matrix powers), written-answer practice with marking against the VCAA style, and a check that the student can explain what a number means in context rather than just find it. We keep a list of the wording the examiners expect (for example, the interpretation of a slope or an r-squared value) and drill it until it is automatic.
Units 1 and 2 General are more varied and vary by school, but usually include univariate and bivariate data, linear relations, financial arithmetic, matrices, sequences and networks. We treat Units 1 and 2 as the year to fix any Year 10 gaps (percentages, linear graphs, basic algebra) and to learn the calculator thoroughly, so Unit 3 starts from a position of confidence.
General tutoring runs one-to-one and in small groups of up to four at the same unit level, in Truganina and online. Many General students from the western suburbs' colleges come to us for the second half of Year 12 to prepare for the two exams; the ones who start earlier build a better bound reference and a much calmer final term.
Seabrook is a small, settled suburb wedged between Point Cook and Altona Meadows. Most Seabrook children go to Seabrook Primary and then to Point Cook Senior, Laverton P-12 or a private school, so we tend to meet Seabrook families around Years 5 and 6 (NAPLAN, scholarship tests) and again in Year 10.
Seabrook to our Truganina centre at 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029 is about 15 minutes by car, via Point Cook Road and Dohertys Road. If getting to Truganina is awkward on a given day, the same session can run online with the same tutor.
Our Seabrook VCE General Maths students attend schools including Seabrook Primary School, Altona Meadows Primary School, Point Cook Senior Secondary College, Laverton P-12 College, Carranballac P-9 College and Alamanda K-9 College. We are independent of all of them; we simply know what they teach and when.
Families from Altona Meadows, Point Cook, Laverton and Williams Landing use the same sessions, and small groups are formed by level, not by suburb.

These are the topics our VCE General Maths tutors work through with Seabrook students, grouped by year level. They come from the same curriculum-aligned question banks that power the free Skills Check, so the check tells us exactly which of these your child needs.
One-to-one tutoring is $35–$45 an hour depending on the year level; small groups of up to five are from $25 an hour. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.
For many courses, yes: business, nursing, education, arts, many science degrees and most TAFE pathways accept General or have no maths prerequisite. Engineering, physical sciences and some commerce courses require Methods. Check the specific course prerequisites before Year 11.
A CAS calculator, most commonly the TI-Nspire or Casio ClassPad. The Finance Solver, statistics and matrix functions are essential and we teach them explicitly.
General marks are lost on rounding to the wrong number of decimal places, mis-typed Finance Solver inputs, missing units, and written interpretations that do not use the required wording. We target those directly.
Yes, and it is common at the end of Year 11 or in the first weeks of Year 12. Students who move usually have strong algebra, so they do well in General once they learn the calculator procedures and the interpretation language.
We cannot do the SAC for a student, but we prepare for them: the topic, the question styles, the calculator procedures and the written answers. We also review a returned SAC to see where the marks went.
