Dubai has one of the largest Australian expatriate communities outside the English-speaking world, spread across Jumeirah, Dubai Marina, Arabian Ranches and the Springs, and most families are on two- to five-year contracts in aviation, construction, finance, hospitality or education.
Maths is the subject where gaps compound. A Year 8 student who cannot add fractions confidently will struggle with algebraic fractions in Year 9, then with rational functions in Year 11 Methods. That is why every RHZ maths student starts with a free online Skills Check pitched at the top of their year level, not the middle: we want to see which of the year's topics are secure, which are shaky, and which earlier-year skills (times tables, place value, negative numbers) are quietly holding them back.
Our tutors teach to the Victorian Curriculum, the same document your child's school plans from. In primary, that means a heavy emphasis on number: counting and partitioning in Prep and Year 1, regrouping in Year 2 and 3, multiplicative thinking and fractions from Year 3 onwards, decimals and percentages in Years 5 and 6. Many of the students we meet in Year 5 or 6 are still counting on their fingers for basic facts, so we rebuild automaticity first: short daily practice, not worksheets of 100 sums.
In Years 7 to 10 the curriculum moves fast: integers and algebraic expressions in Year 7, linear equations and indices in Year 8, surds, trigonometry and linear graphs in Year 9, then quadratics, simultaneous equations and the first taste of VCE-style problems in Year 10. Our secondary sessions follow the school's sequence so that tutoring reinforces class, but a tutor will step back a year whenever the Skills Check shows the foundation is missing. Year 10 is also where we prepare students for the Methods versus General decision, so they choose from strength rather than fear.
A typical session runs for an hour. The first ten minutes are retrieval practice on the previous week's skills, the middle thirty-five to forty minutes are new teaching and worked examples with the tutor watching the student work (not just marking), and the last ten minutes are a short check that the student can do it alone. After every session you receive a plain-English progress note: what was covered, what is secure, what is next. Homework is small and specific, usually ten to fifteen minutes a night.
Small-group sessions (three to five students of a similar level) are the most popular option for primary and junior secondary maths because the price is lower and students often work harder alongside peers. One-to-one suits students who are a long way behind, a long way ahead, or anxious about maths. The first reason is pace. Australian year levels are numbered and sequenced differently from British Key Stages, the American grade system and the IB, and a child can be doing well at an international school in Dubai while quietly drifting a year off the Australian sequence in maths, or missing the explicit grammar and analytical-writing work Australian schools expect. Our tutors teach to the Victorian Curriculum, which is the Australian Curriculum as Victoria implements it, so every session keeps your child on the Australian year level they will be placed in when they return.
Returning-home readiness is the second. Whether the destination is a Victorian school and the VCE, a New South Wales school and the HSC, or a selective-entry or scholarship exam, the child who arrives from Dubai already working at Australian standard settles in a term; the child who arrives a year behind spends Years 9 and 10 catching up. We run selective-entry and scholarship preparation for overseas students in exactly the same program our Melbourne students use.
The third reason is that NAPLAN is not available in Dubai. NAPLAN is sat in Australian schools in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 and is the one standardised benchmark Australian parents rely on; overseas, there is nothing equivalent against the Australian scale. Our free online Skills Check fills that gap. It is pitched at the top of the child's Australian year level, drawn from a 5,900-question bank across Prep to Year 12, and produces a same-day topic-by-topic report. Families in Dubai run it once a year as their NAPLAN substitute, and again before a move home.
Dubai parents tell us the same thing: the school is excellent, but it is a British or IB school, and nobody there is thinking about what Year 9 back in Melbourne or Sydney will expect.
We are not aware of an Australian-curriculum school in Dubai; our students there attend Australian-curriculum, British, American and IB international schools such as Dubai College, Jumeirah College, GEMS Wellington International School and Dubai British School, and the tutor bridges the gap to the Australian sequence.
A 9pm session in Melbourne is 3pm in Dubai (2pm once Melbourne moves to daylight saving), because Dubai is 6 hours behind Melbourne while Melbourne is on AEST and 7 hours behind Melbourne on AEDT. Dubai is on Gulf Standard Time, UTC+4. Melbourne is on AEST (UTC+10) until 3 October 2026 and AEDT (UTC+11) from 4 October 2026 to the first Sunday in April. For a family in Dubai the free Skills Check does three jobs. It tells you where your child sits against their Australian year level, topic by topic, which no international-school report can. It gives the tutor a starting point, so the first paid session is teaching rather than diagnosing. And, repeated each year, it becomes the benchmark NAPLAN would have provided: you can see whether the child is holding their Australian year level, drifting, or pulling ahead.
There is no card and no commitment. If the result shows your child is on track, we will say so; if it shows a gap, we will tell you exactly which topics and suggest a plan.
Online small-group sessions (two to four students at the same Australian year level) are from A$25 an hour. One-to-one sessions are A$35 to A$45 an hour depending on year level, with VCE at the top of the range. Prices are the same as for families in Melbourne; there is no international surcharge. Plans are monthly, you choose the number of sessions a week, and you can pause or cancel any time, which matters for families in Dubai who travel over the northern summer.

Both. The Victorian Curriculum is Victoria's implementation of the Australian Curriculum for Prep to Year 10, with the same content sequence, so a child in Dubai who is returning to any Australian state is covered. For Years 11 and 12 we tutor to the VCE study designs; ask us about HSC or other state courses and we will be honest about fit.
Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons Dubai families contact us. Australian schools place students by age and year level regardless of what an international school has covered, so we run a Skills Check as soon as the move is confirmed, focus on the Australian topics the current school has not covered, and hand the new school a clear picture of where the child sits.
Only through a registered VCE provider: a Victorian school, Virtual School Victoria, or an overseas school that offers the VCE. RHZ is not a VCE provider and cannot enrol students, but we tutor VCE subjects to students who are enrolled, and we prepare Year 10 students in Dubai who will start VCE on their return to Victoria.
Usually yes, because most students who hate maths actually hate feeling lost in class. Once the Skills Check shows us the two or three missing skills and the tutor rebuilds them, the class work starts making sense again and the attitude follows. We do not push extension work until the confidence is back.
Both. We plan from the Victorian Curriculum, so the topics line up with your child's school. Within that we follow the Skills Check result: if a Year 7 student cannot yet do fractions, we fix fractions before we touch algebra, even if the class has moved on.
