NAPLAN is the same test in Canberra as in Melbourne: the same online, adaptive Reading, Writing, Conventions of Language and Numeracy tests, sat in March by every Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 student in Australia, reported in the same four proficiency levels. The ACT has no selective-entry test and no opportunity classes. Students move from primary school to a high school for Years 7 to 10 and then to a college for Years 11 and 12, so the pressure point for Canberra families is the college transition and the ACT's coursework-heavy assessment rather than a placement exam. The independent schools run their own scholarship tests, usually in Year 6, and we prepare students for those.
Years 11 and 12 in the ACT are taught at colleges and assessed entirely by the school through moderated coursework, with no external subject examinations; the ACT Scaling Test is used to scale results for the ATAR. For Prep to Year 10, yes in content and sequence. Each state publishes its own version (NESA syllabuses in New South Wales, the SCSA curriculum in Western Australia, the Victorian Curriculum in Victoria) but all are built on the Australian Curriculum version 9, so a Year 5 child in Canberra is doing the same fractions, decimals and measurement as a Year 5 child in Melbourne. Years 11 and 12 are where the states genuinely differ.
