🇦🇺 Online in every state and territory👩‍🏫 Australian-Curriculum-trained tutors, valid WWCC⭐ 5.0 · 34 Google reviews

If you are looking for an online maths tutor, English tutor or NAPLAN tutor in Newcastle, this page explains how RHZ Tutoring works for New South Wales families: what we teach and why it lines up with New South Wales schools, how sessions run in Newcastle time, what we can and cannot honestly help with in Years 11 and 12, what it costs, and how the free Skills Check works. RHZ is a small Melbourne tutoring centre in Truganina, rated 5.0 on Google from 34 reviews, and it tutors online in every state and territory.

Newcastle is the second-largest city in New South Wales and the heart of the Hunter, with its own selective high school (Merewether), a large university and a school population spread from the beaches to Lake Macquarie and Maitland. Tutoring options are good in the inner suburbs and thin further out.

Why families in Newcastle choose online tutoring with RHZ

The first reason is that the curriculum is national. Prep to Year 10 maths, English and science in New South Wales follow a syllabus built on the Australian Curriculum (version 9), the same document Victoria's curriculum and every other state's is built on. The strands, the content and the order are the same: fractions in Year 3, algebra from Year 7, quadratics in Year 10. A tutor in Melbourne can plan a session for a child in Newcastle and be confident it lines up with the school, and the tutor checks the school's current unit in the first session so nothing is out of step.

The second is diagnosis. Before anyone is charged anything, the child does the free online Skills Check: 10 to 15 minutes pitched at the top of their year level, from a 5,900-question bank covering Prep to Year 12, with a same-day topic-by-topic report. Families in Newcastle tell us it is the first time anyone has shown them exactly where the gaps are rather than telling them the child is 'a bit behind'. A tutor walks you through the result in a free consultation and the plan is built from it.

The third reason is access. Specialist tutors for secondary maths, science and senior subjects are scarce outside the capitals, and a family in Newcastle has often had to choose between whoever is available locally and nobody. Online tutoring matches the child to a tutor who teaches that subject and year level every day, in a small group with students at the same level from anywhere in Australia, at a slot that fits after school rather than after a drive.

Finally, cost. Because sessions are online and our overheads are one small centre in Melbourne, small groups are from $25 an hour and one-to-one $35 to $45 an hour for families in Newcastle, with monthly plans you can pause or cancel. Compare that with a local quote for an hour of one-to-one tutoring; the difference usually covers a second subject.

Online tutoring gives a Newcastle or Lake Macquarie family the same access to a specialist tutor as a family in Sydney, with no travel, and it is the only realistic option for a Year 10 student in the outer Hunter who wants weekly help with a specific subject.

Tutoring for New South Wales students: NAPLAN, selective and OC tests, and the HSC

NAPLAN is the same test in Newcastle as in Melbourne: the same online, adaptive Reading, Writing, Conventions of Language and Numeracy tests, sat in March by every Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 student in Australia, reported in the same four proficiency levels. Our NAPLAN preparation runs online in small groups by year level from Term 4 through to the test window, built from the Skills Check rather than from endless practice tests, and it is exactly the preparation a Newcastle child needs because it is exactly the test they will sit.

New South Wales runs the most competitive selective-school system in the country. The Selective High School Placement Test is sat in Year 6 for entry to Year 7 at fully and partially selective high schools, and the Opportunity Class (OC) Placement Test is sat in Year 4 for Years 5 and 6 opportunity classes. Both assess reading, mathematical reasoning, thinking skills and writing at a level above the classroom, so preparation really means being a year ahead in maths and English and writing well under time. That is what our selective and scholarship program builds, and it runs online for NSW students on the same timeline as our Melbourne students.

Years 11 and 12 in New South Wales follow NESA syllabuses (Mathematics Standard, Advanced and Extension; English Standard, Advanced and Extension; the separate sciences), with school-based assessment feeding into the HSC examinations. RHZ tutors the HSC the way we tutor every non-Victorian senior certificate: we support the underlying maths, English and science skills and the study technique a Year 11 or 12 student needs, but we do not claim HSC syllabus or school-assessment expertise. In practice that means a Year 11 student in Newcastle can use us for the algebra, calculus and problem-solving that every senior maths course rests on, the analytical and persuasive writing every senior English course assesses, the chemistry, physics and biology concepts and the way to write a scientific explanation, and the habits of planning, note-making and timed practice. What we will not do is pretend to know your school's assessment program better than the teacher who wrote it.

Schools in Newcastle our tutoring lines up with

Whether your child is at Merewether High School, Newcastle High School and Newcastle Grammar School or any other school in Newcastle, the Prep to Year 10 content is the same Australian Curriculum our tutors teach from, and the tutor works from the school's current unit and the Skills Check result rather than from a generic program. We are independent of every school.

How online sessions run for Newcastle students

Every session is a live video lesson with a Melbourne-based tutor who works with your child each week. Nothing is pre-recorded, and the tutor, the Skills Check and the progress notes are identical to what a family who walks into our Truganina centre gets.

Session times in Newcastle

Newcastle is the same time as Melbourne all year: a 4pm session booked in Melbourne time is 4pm in Newcastle. Newcastle is on AEST/AEDT, the same clock as Melbourne all year.

Melbourne slotNewcastle time
Weekday 4pm4pm

Weekday 6pm6pm

No conversion needed: book the after-school slot that suits and it is the same on both clocks. All a student needs is a laptop or tablet with a camera, a stable connection and a quiet spot; for maths, a phone pointed at the page lets the tutor watch the working.

What the free Skills Check gives a Newcastle family

For a family in Newcastle the free Skills Check does three jobs. It shows where your child sits against their year level, topic by topic, in a way a school report never quite does. It gives the tutor a starting point, so the first paid session is teaching rather than diagnosing. And repeated once a year it becomes a benchmark between NAPLAN years: you can see whether the child is holding their year level, drifting, or pulling ahead.

There is no card and no commitment. If the result shows your child is on track, we will say so; if it shows a gap, we will tell you exactly which topics and suggest a plan.

Pricing for Newcastle families

Small online groups (two to four students at the same year level) are from $25 an hour. One-to-one sessions are $35 to $45 an hour depending on year level, with senior students at the top of the range. Prices are the same as for families who come to our Melbourne centre; there is no interstate surcharge. Plans are monthly, you choose the number of sessions a week, and you can pause or cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free.

Practice papers you can download today in Newcastle

Our Australian-curriculum practice papers are sold as instant PDF downloads: buy from Newcastle, print at home, and mark against the included answers. They cover primary maths and English, Years 7 to 10 maths, and NAPLAN-style reading, writing and numeracy for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, all of which line up with the New South Wales syllabus because they are written to the same Australian Curriculum content. Many families use them alongside tutoring, or on their own between Skills Checks.

Frequently asked questions

Do you know the New South Wales syllabus?

For Prep to Year 10, yes in substance: New South Wales's syllabus is built on the Australian Curriculum, the same as Victoria's, and our tutors work from the school's current unit. For Years 11 and 12 we are honest: we support the maths, English and science skills and the study technique a HSC student needs, but we do not claim HSC syllabus or school-assessment expertise, and we will say so if a subject is outside what we can help with.

How do the session times work between Newcastle and Melbourne?

Newcastle is the same time as Melbourne all year. A 4pm weekday session in Melbourne time is 4pm in Newcastle. We book in your local time, confirm the Melbourne equivalent in writing, and adjust automatically when clocks change.

Is the Australian Curriculum really the same in Newcastle as in Victoria?

For Prep to Year 10, yes in content and sequence. Each state publishes its own version (NESA syllabuses in New South Wales, the SCSA curriculum in Western Australia, the Victorian Curriculum in Victoria) but all are built on the Australian Curriculum version 9, so a Year 5 child in Newcastle is doing the same fractions, decimals and measurement as a Year 5 child in Melbourne. Years 11 and 12 are where the states genuinely differ.

Do you do NAPLAN preparation for Newcastle students?

Yes, for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN is a national test, so a Newcastle student sits exactly the test our Melbourne students sit. Small online groups by year level run from Term 4 to the March test window, built from the Skills Check, and one-to-one is available all year.

Can you prepare my child for the NSW selective or OC test?

Yes. The Opportunity Class test in Year 4 and the Selective High School Placement Test in Year 6 assess reading, mathematical reasoning, thinking skills and writing above year level. We start with a Skills Check, then build a program of above-level maths and English, reasoning practice and timed writing, online in small groups or one-to-one, on the same timeline our Melbourne selective students use.

What does online tutoring cost for a family in Newcastle?

The same as in Melbourne: small online groups from $25 an hour and one-to-one $35 to $45 an hour depending on year level. Plans are monthly with no lock-in. The Skills Check and the consultation are free, and there is no interstate surcharge.
