Year 11 English is where a lot of families first look for help, usually after a test, a report or a SAC that did not go the way they expected. Year 11 English (Units 1 and 2) introduces the three tasks of the VCE course: reading and responding to texts analytically, creating texts within a framework of ideas with a written explanation, and analysing argument in persuasive texts. Units 1 and 2 are the place to learn the methods: how to plan an essay from the topic, how to write an analytical paragraph that argues rather than describes, how to track an argument and explain how language positions a reader, and how to write under time. Our VCE English tutors teach those methods and practise them on the school's set texts, marking to the VCAA criteria every week.
English counts in the top four for every ATAR, and Unit 3 SACs start counting in the first weeks of Year 12. Students who arrive in Year 12 still describing rather than analysing lose marks they never recover. Year 11 is the year to fix that.
The pressure points in Year 11 are workload and choices. The jump from Year 10 to five or six VCE subjects with SACs every few weeks is real, and organisation decides a lot. Early in the year there is a window to change subjects (most often from Methods to General), and by Term 3 students choose their Unit 3 and 4 subjects for Year 12, including whether to continue with Specialist or a second science. English is the one subject every VCE student must complete, and it counts in the top four for every ATAR. It is also the subject where the gap between an average and a strong study score is most often about technique rather than talent. Students know the text; they lose marks because the essay does not answer the topic, the paragraphs are not analytical, or the argument analysis describes techniques without explaining their effect on the audience.
Our VCE English tutoring follows the current study design. In Unit 3 students respond analytically to a set text and create their own texts within a Framework of Ideas; in Unit 4 they respond to a second text and analyse argument. The end-of-year exam covers all three. We teach a structure for each task, then practise it on the school's actual set texts and the school's own SAC style, so the improvement shows up where it counts.
Text response is taught around the topic: we teach students to break down the prompt, decide on a contention, plan three or four ideas that genuinely argue it, and use evidence embedded in analytical sentences rather than dropped in as quotations. Creating texts is a newer task that many students find vague; we work on choosing a form and a purpose, using the mentor texts well, and writing the written explanation the assessors expect. Argument analysis is taught as a method: identify the contention and the tone, track how the argument develops, and explain how specific language and visuals position the reader.
Every session contains writing. Students write a paragraph or a timed section, the tutor marks it against the VCAA criteria in front of them, and the student rewrites the weakest part. Over a term this produces a visible shift in the quality of analysis and in the speed of writing under time pressure, which matters for a three-hour exam. We also maintain a personal list of expressions, connectives and vocabulary that the student can actually use.
VCE English is available one-to-one and in small groups of two to four, at our Truganina centre and online. Students from schools across the west study different texts, so groups are formed by task rather than by text. Year 10 students who want a head start can begin with analytical writing and argument analysis in Term 4, which we recommend for anyone aiming at a high English score.
Year 11 sessions are an hour, subject-specific, one-to-one or in a small group of two to four at the same unit level. A maths session runs retrieval on earlier areas of study, the current topic with worked examples, guided practice with CAS where relevant, and a timed set marked in the VCAA style. An English session produces a timed paragraph or section on the school's text, marked to criteria and rewritten. A science session pairs concept teaching with calculation drills and exam-style explanations. Before a SAC the session becomes SAC preparation on that topic and question style. A progress note follows every session.
Small groups of two to four at the same unit level are popular for Methods, General and the sciences, and the price is lower. One-to-one suits English, Specialist Maths (where numbers at each school are small), students who moved subjects, and students aiming for a top study score. Online works well for VCE and is often the student's preference; for Specialist and Physics it means being matched to a genuinely strong tutor rather than the nearest one. The Truganina centre runs holiday revision blocks and the Term 4 Unit 3 head start.
For Year 11, small groups (up to four students at the same level) are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $45 an hour. Across all year levels, small groups are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour, with VCE at the top of the range. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.

No, not directly; they are reported as S or N. But every Unit 3 and 4 course assumes them, and a student who coasts in Year 11 usually struggles in Year 12. An early Unit 3 and 4 subject taken in Year 11 does count.
Sometimes yes. If they are drowning by the end of Term 1 despite real effort, General with a strong study score is often the better outcome. If they are coping but slow, algebra fluency and CAS technique usually fix it. We will give a frank view after the Skills Check and the first SAC.
