What Year 11 VCE covers

Year 11 maths is three different subjects. Mathematical Methods Units 1 and 2 cover functions and graphs (polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, circular), algebra and equations, the start of calculus (rates of change, differentiation), and probability, with the CAS calculator used throughout. General Mathematics Units 1 and 2 cover data analysis, linear relations and graphs, financial arithmetic, matrices, sequences and networks. Specialist Mathematics Units 1 and 2 add proof, complex numbers, vectors, trigonometric identities and advanced algebra, and must be taken with Methods. Our Year 11 maths tutors teach the subject the student is enrolled in, to the current study design, and use Year 11 to make the algebra fast and the calculator fluent before Unit 3.

Year 11 English (Units 1 and 2) introduces the three tasks of the VCE course: reading and responding to texts analytically, creating texts within a framework of ideas with a written explanation, and analysing argument in persuasive texts. Units 1 and 2 are the place to learn the methods: how to plan an essay from the topic, how to write an analytical paragraph that argues rather than describes, how to track an argument and explain how language positions a reader, and how to write under time. Our VCE English tutors teach those methods and practise them on the school's set texts, marking to the VCAA criteria every week.

Year 11 sciences set the foundations Units 3 and 4 assume. Chemistry Units 1 and 2 cover atomic structure and bonding, the mole and quantitative chemistry, water and solutions, acids and bases and analytical techniques; students who leave Year 11 without confident mole calculations pay for it all through Unit 3. Physics Units 1 and 2 cover thermodynamics, electricity, radiation and nuclear physics, and motion, and the habits of setting out (diagram, principle, equation, units) are learned here. Biology Units 1 and 2 cover cells, body systems, reproduction and genetics, and the vocabulary and answer structure that Unit 3 exam questions demand. We also help students decide, by Term 3, which sciences to carry into Year 12, based on how Units 1 and 2 have gone rather than on hope.

The pressure points in Year 11 are workload and choices. The jump from Year 10 to five or six VCE subjects with SACs every few weeks is real, and organisation decides a lot. Early in the year there is a window to change subjects (most often from Methods to General), and by Term 3 students choose their Unit 3 and 4 subjects for Year 12, including whether to continue with Specialist or a second science. Year 11 milestones and pressure points

• Units 1 and 2 in five or six subjects, assessed by the school (S or N); results do not count towards the study score but the content is assumed in Units 3 and 4.
• SACs every few weeks from Term 1: the first real experience of school-assessed coursework and its timelines.
• The subject-change window early in the year, most often Methods to General; a decision best made with data rather than panic.
• The GAT in June for any student doing a Unit 3 and 4 subject early.
• Unit 3 and 4 subject selection in Term 3 for Year 12: Specialist or not, which sciences, whether to keep six subjects.
• Term 4: Unit 3 head start, since Unit 3 SACs start counting from the first weeks of Year 12.

How the VCE works and how we tutor it

The VCE is assessed in two ways that combine into a study score out of 50 for each subject: school-assessed coursework (SACs) set and marked by the school and moderated against the examination, and the end-of-year examinations set by the VCAA. Units 1 and 2 are assessed by the school alone and reported as S or N; Units 3 and 4 produce the study score. Study scores are scaled by VTAC and combined into the ATAR, with English (or EAL, Literature or a Language) compulsory in the top four. Every Unit 3 and 4 student sits the General Achievement Test in June.

RHZ tutors seven VCE subjects, each by a tutor who knows the current study design: Mathematical Methods, General Mathematics, Specialist Mathematics, English, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. The maths subjects are taught with CAS technique and, for Units 3 and 4, a bound reference built progressively; English is taught around weekly timed writing marked to the VCAA criteria; the sciences combine calculation drills with exam-style explanations and preparation for the student-designed investigation. From mid-year in Unit 3 every subject moves to past VCAA examinations and the examiner reports, which tell you precisely where students lose marks.

We are direct about what the examiners reward: showing the setting-up of a problem, correct notation, exact answers when asked, the right number of decimal places, precise scientific language, and essays that answer the topic rather than the one the student prepared. Each session ends with a short timed set or piece of writing marked in the VCAA style, so students learn to self-check, and a progress note to you says which areas of study are secure and what comes next.

How Year 11 sessions run

Year 11 sessions are an hour, subject-specific, one-to-one or in a small group of two to four at the same unit level. A maths session runs retrieval on earlier areas of study, the current topic with worked examples, guided practice with CAS where relevant, and a timed set marked in the VCAA style. An English session produces a timed paragraph or section on the school's text, marked to criteria and rewritten. A science session pairs concept teaching with calculation drills and exam-style explanations. Before a SAC the session becomes SAC preparation on that topic and question style. A progress note follows every session.

Group or one-to-one for Year 11?

Small groups of two to four at the same unit level are popular for Methods, General and the sciences, and the price is lower. One-to-one suits English, Specialist Maths (where numbers at each school are small), students who moved subjects, and students aiming for a top study score. Online works well for VCE and is often the student's preference; for Specialist and Physics it means being matched to a genuinely strong tutor rather than the nearest one. The Truganina centre runs holiday revision blocks and the Term 4 Unit 3 head start.

Pricing for Year 11

For Year 11, small groups (up to four students at the same level) are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $45 an hour. Across all year levels, small groups are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour, with VCE at the top of the range. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.

A typical Year 11 week with RHZ

Here is what a typical week looks like for a Year 11 student doing VCE with us alongside school; most families run one session a week per subject, two in the term before a test or exam.

• Monday: School; the student sends the tutor the SAC calendar for the term and this week's topics.
• Tuesday 6:30pm: Methods small group at Truganina: retrieval on functions, differentiation from first principles, CAS technique, a timed set marked in VCAA style.
• Wednesday 6:00pm: Chemistry online, one-to-one: mole calculations with limiting reagents, then six exam-style questions with full working.
• Thursday 6:00pm: English online: argument analysis on a current persuasive piece, a timed body paragraph marked to criteria.
• Friday: Thirty minutes of tutor-set questions; SAC dates checked against the study plan.
• Sunday: Forty minutes on the Year 11 Methods practice quiz, then the bound-reference notes for the week filed.
