Year 12 English is where a lot of families first look for help, usually after a test, a report or a SAC that did not go the way they expected. Year 12 English is Units 3 and 4 of the current study design: analytical text response on the set texts, creating texts within the Framework of Ideas with a written explanation, and analysing argument, with a three-hour exam covering all three. The oral presentation is assessed during the year. Our VCE English tutors teach a method for each task, practise it on the school's actual set texts and SAC styles, and mark every piece to the VCAA criteria. Every session includes timed writing, because a three-hour exam rewards students who can plan and write quickly.
English counts in every ATAR, and the gap between an average and a strong score is usually technique: answering the topic, arguing rather than describing, and explaining how language positions a reader. Those are teachable, and Term 1 is the time.
The pressure points are relentless and predictable: a SAC calendar that never quite lets up, the GAT in June, the September holidays as the last real revision window, the exam timetable itself, and for maths students the bound reference that has to be built rather than panicked over in October. English is the one subject every VCE student must complete, and it counts in the top four for every ATAR. It is also the subject where the gap between an average and a strong study score is most often about technique rather than talent. Students know the text; they lose marks because the essay does not answer the topic, the paragraphs are not analytical, or the argument analysis describes techniques without explaining their effect on the audience.
Our VCE English tutoring follows the current study design. In Unit 3 students respond analytically to a set text and create their own texts within a Framework of Ideas; in Unit 4 they respond to a second text and analyse argument. The end-of-year exam covers all three. We teach a structure for each task, then practise it on the school's actual set texts and the school's own SAC style, so the improvement shows up where it counts.
Text response is taught around the topic: we teach students to break down the prompt, decide on a contention, plan three or four ideas that genuinely argue it, and use evidence embedded in analytical sentences rather than dropped in as quotations. Creating texts is a newer task that many students find vague; we work on choosing a form and a purpose, using the mentor texts well, and writing the written explanation the assessors expect. Argument analysis is taught as a method: identify the contention and the tone, track how the argument develops, and explain how specific language and visuals position the reader.
Every session contains writing. Students write a paragraph or a timed section, the tutor marks it against the VCAA criteria in front of them, and the student rewrites the weakest part. Over a term this produces a visible shift in the quality of analysis and in the speed of writing under time pressure, which matters for a three-hour exam. We also maintain a personal list of expressions, connectives and vocabulary that the student can actually use.
VCE English is available one-to-one and in small groups of two to four, at our Truganina centre and online. Students from schools across the west study different texts, so groups are formed by task rather than by text. Year 10 students who want a head start can begin with analytical writing and argument analysis in Term 4, which we recommend for anyone aiming at a high English score.
Year 12 sessions are an hour, subject-specific, one-to-one or in a small group of two to four at the same subject. Maths sessions run retrieval, the current area of study with worked examples, a hand-skills set for Exam 1 subjects, CAS technique, and a timed set marked in VCAA style; the bound reference is added to every week. English sessions are timed writing on the school's texts and tasks, marked to criteria and rewritten. Science sessions pair concept teaching with calculation drills and multi-mark explanation questions. From Term 3 every session includes past VCAA exam material and examiner-report feedback. Before each SAC the session becomes SAC preparation. A progress note follows every session.
Small groups of two to four at the same subject work well for Methods, General, Chemistry and Biology and are cheaper. One-to-one suits English, Specialist, Physics, students aiming for the top study scores, and any student who needs to recover from a poor SAC. Online is the most common Year 12 format because it saves travel time students do not have and lets us match Specialist and Physics students with genuinely strong tutors. The Truganina centre runs September-holiday exam blocks.
For Year 12, small groups (up to four students at the same level) are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $45 an hour. Across all year levels, small groups are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour, with VCE at the top of the range. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.

The written examinations run from 27 October to 18 November 2026. The GAT is in June, and results (study scores and the ATAR) are released in December.
No. Many of our students join in Term 3 for exam preparation, and past-exam practice with examiner-report feedback in the last ten weeks makes a measurable difference. Earlier is better, because SACs count from Term 1, but later is still worth it.
Each subject's study score is built from school-assessed coursework (moderated against the exam) and the VCAA examination. The exact weighting varies by subject. Both matter; a strong exam can lift moderated SAC scores.
Whichever text your school has chosen from the VCAA text list. Our tutors prepare for the student's set text, and because we teach a method rather than a set of memorised essays, the skills transfer between texts.
Yes. The oral is assessed in Unit 3 or 4 depending on the school. We help choose a current issue, structure the argument, write for speaking rather than reading, and practise delivery.
Length is not analysis. Average essays retell or describe; strong essays argue and explain. We rebuild the paragraph so every sentence is doing analytical work, and we teach students to plan for the topic rather than write what they prepared.
