Year 9 English is where a lot of families first look for help, usually after a test, a report or a SAC that did not go the way they expected. Year 9 English is the first year the essay looks like VCE. Students write full analytical responses to a set text with a contention, topic sentences, embedded evidence and analysis of the author's choices; they analyse how a persuasive text positions its audience; and they write creatively with controlled technique. The Victorian Curriculum expects Year 9 writers to sustain an argument across an essay and to use language precisely. Our tutors teach essay planning from the topic, an analytical paragraph structure, and the habit of writing under time, and they work on the school's actual set text and tasks.
NAPLAN Reading and Writing in Year 9 use longer, denser texts and a persuasive or narrative task that rewards sophisticated structure and vocabulary. Conventions of Language at Year 9 includes complex sentence punctuation and grammar. We prepare through the student's own writing and a few NAPLAN-style passages, not through drilling.
Year 9 is also the 'Year 9 dip': engagement, effort and often results fall in the middle of secondary school, and a student who was fine in Year 7 can drift for a year without anyone quite noticing. NAPLAN in March is the last one, and it matters more than earlier ones in two ways: a strong Year 9 result can meet the literacy and numeracy standard for the VCE, and it is the last external benchmark before subject choices. At the end of Year 9, many schools ask students to choose Year 10 electives and, in some cases, an early VCE Unit 1 and 2 subject, so Year 9 marks quietly shape the pathway.

English is harder to tutor well than maths because the gaps are less visible. A child can read fluently and still not comprehend; a student can write a long essay that never actually answers the question. Our free Skills Check for English looks separately at comprehension, spelling and phonics, grammar and writing, so the tutor knows on day one whether the problem is decoding, understanding, expressing or organising.
In the early years (Prep to Year 2) our focus is systematic phonics and fluency: sound-letter knowledge, blending, high-frequency words and reading aloud with expression. From Year 3 the balance shifts to comprehension and writing: finding evidence in a text, inferring, summarising, and writing paragraphs with a clear topic sentence. By Years 5 and 6 we are working on structured persuasive and narrative writing, the two genres NAPLAN assesses, and on the vocabulary and sentence variety that separate a good piece from an average one.
In secondary English the Victorian Curriculum expects students to analyse how authors construct meaning and how writers build an argument. That is a big jump from primary, and many Year 7 and 8 students we meet are still retelling the plot rather than analysing it. Our tutors teach a simple, explicit structure for analytical paragraphs (point, evidence, explanation of the author's technique, link back to the question), then practise it on the actual texts the school has set. Persuasive writing gets the same treatment: contention, arguments, evidence, rebuttal and language techniques.
Sessions are built around writing, not just talking about writing. A typical hour includes a short comprehension or vocabulary task, a focused teaching point (for example, embedding quotations, or using a semicolon correctly), a piece of writing done in the session, and immediate marking against the criteria a teacher would use. Students keep a running list of their own recurring errors, which shrinks over the term.
For students who speak another language at home, or who read well below their year level, we slow down and go back to the mechanics: sentence structure, tense, articles and prepositions, and lots of guided reading. For strong students we extend into scholarship-style writing and Year 10 texts that lead into VCE. Whichever end your child is at, you get a progress note after every session with a specific next step.
Year 9 sessions are an hour, one-to-one or in a small group of up to four at the same level. Maths hours run retrieval on earlier topics, the week's teaching point with worked examples, guided practice with attention to setting out, and a short timed set. English hours produce an essay paragraph or a timed section on the school's text, marked live against criteria and rewritten. Science hours pair concept teaching on the current unit with exam-style questions and data analysis. Every session ends with a progress note to you; homework is short and targeted.
Small groups of up to four are the most popular option for Year 9 maths and science; students at this age often work harder alongside peers, and the price is lower. One-to-one suits English, students who have disengaged, and students well ahead who want extension towards Year 10 and VCE. Online works well for Year 9 in every subject and is often the student's preference; the Truganina centre is used for revision blocks and holiday programs.
For Year 9, small groups (up to four students at the same level) are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $40 an hour. Across all year levels, small groups are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour, with VCE at the top of the range. Yes. Bring the text and the essay topic and the tutor will work on that. We deliberately practise analysis on the school's set text so the improvement shows up in the next assessment.
