Year 5 English is about reading and writing with purpose. The Victorian Curriculum expects a Year 5 reader to identify an author's point of view and the techniques used to persuade or engage, to compare texts, and to make inferences across a whole text. Writing moves from structure to quality: persuasive pieces with a clear position, arguments developed with evidence, and a conclusion; narratives with a real complication; complex sentences; and vocabulary chosen for effect. Our tutors teach a short planning method for each genre and mark writing against the criteria a teacher (or NAPLAN) uses.
For NAPLAN and for scholarship writing tasks, timing matters: a Year 5 child has to plan, write and check in forty minutes or less. We practise that gradually, starting with untimed pieces and moving to timed ones by February. Reading comprehension for scholarship tests is pitched at Year 6 to 7 level, and we build the vocabulary and inference skills that make those passages accessible.
Two milestones make Year 5 a pressure point. NAPLAN in March, which is the second time a child is benchmarked and the point at which parents usually look at the trajectory from Year 3. English is harder to tutor well than maths because the gaps are less visible. A child can read fluently and still not comprehend; a student can write a long essay that never actually answers the question. Our free Skills Check for English looks separately at comprehension, spelling and phonics, grammar and writing, so the tutor knows on day one whether the problem is decoding, understanding, expressing or organising.
In the early years (Prep to Year 2) our focus is systematic phonics and fluency: sound-letter knowledge, blending, high-frequency words and reading aloud with expression. From Year 3 the balance shifts to comprehension and writing: finding evidence in a text, inferring, summarising, and writing paragraphs with a clear topic sentence. By Years 5 and 6 we are working on structured persuasive and narrative writing, the two genres NAPLAN assesses, and on the vocabulary and sentence variety that separate a good piece from an average one.
In secondary English the Victorian Curriculum expects students to analyse how authors construct meaning and how writers build an argument. That is a big jump from primary, and many Year 7 and 8 students we meet are still retelling the plot rather than analysing it. Our tutors teach a simple, explicit structure for analytical paragraphs (point, evidence, explanation of the author's technique, link back to the question), then practise it on the actual texts the school has set. Persuasive writing gets the same treatment: contention, arguments, evidence, rebuttal and language techniques.
Sessions are built around writing, not just talking about writing. A typical hour includes a short comprehension or vocabulary task, a focused teaching point (for example, embedding quotations, or using a semicolon correctly), a piece of writing done in the session, and immediate marking against the criteria a teacher would use. Students keep a running list of their own recurring errors, which shrinks over the term.
For students who speak another language at home, or who read well below their year level, we slow down and go back to the mechanics: sentence structure, tense, articles and prepositions, and lots of guided reading. For strong students we extend into scholarship-style writing and Year 10 texts that lead into VCE. Whichever end your child is at, you get a progress note after every session with a specific next step.
Year 5 sessions are an hour, one-to-one or in a small group of up to four at the same level. Maths hours open with a mixed warm-up of ten questions from earlier topics (retrieval practice), then the week's teaching point with worked examples, guided practice, and a short timed set to finish. English hours combine a passage with inference and vocabulary questions, a teaching point, and a piece of writing that is planned, written and marked in the session. Scholarship-preparation sessions add timed reasoning sets. A progress note follows every session.
Small groups of up to four are the most common format for Year 5 and work well for NAPLAN preparation, where the group practises the same skills and formats together. One-to-one suits scholarship preparation in the early months, students well behind or well ahead, and anxious students. Online is a good fit from Year 5 for both subjects, and many families run online sessions during the term and come into the Truganina centre for revision blocks before NAPLAN or a scholarship test.
For Year 5, small groups (up to four students at the same level) are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35 an hour. Yes, it is the main preparation year for Year 7 entry. Most scholarship tests are sat in Term 1 or 2 of Year 6, so Year 5 gives two or three terms to cover maths and reading above year level, learn the reasoning question types and practise timed writing without cramming.
The content is Year 4 and 5 level (larger numbers, fractions and decimals, area and perimeter, more complex inference) and the test is adaptive, so it gets harder as a child answers correctly. Writing is more often persuasive at this level. We prepare by teaching the skills, then using NAPLAN-style questions to check.
For NAPLAN and scholarship tests, yes: both are timed. Slowness is usually a number-facts or a reading-the-question problem, and both are fixable. We build speed gradually with short timed sets.
Very. Reading and writing are related but separate skills, and writing has to be taught explicitly: how to plan, how to structure a paragraph, how to vary sentences, how to edit. Most of our English work with strong readers is on writing.
Yes. Bring the text and the essay topic and the tutor will work on that. We deliberately practise analysis on the school's set text so the improvement shows up in the next assessment.
