If you are looking for a Year 12 tutor, this page explains what Year 12 actually involves in Victorian schools, where students most often get stuck, what we teach, how sessions run for children aged 17 and 18, what it costs and how to start. RHZ Tutoring is a small local centre at 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, rated 5.0 on Google, tutoring in person and online across Melbourne's west and Australia-wide.
Year 12 is the year everything counts. Units 3 and 4 in each subject are assessed by school-assessed coursework (SACs, which are moderated against the exam) and by the end-of-year examinations set by the VCAA, and the two are combined into a study score out of 50. Study scores are scaled and combined into the ATAR, with English (or EAL, Literature or Language) compulsory in the top four. The written examinations in 2026 run from 27 October to 18 November, the GAT is sat in June, and results are released in December. Unit 3 starts in the first week of Term 1 and the first SACs typically fall within weeks.
The pressure points are relentless and predictable: a SAC calendar that never quite lets up, the GAT in June, the September holidays as the last real revision window, the exam timetable itself, and for maths students the bound reference that has to be built rather than panicked over in October. Our Year 12 tutoring is subject-specific (Mathematical Methods, General Mathematics, Specialist Mathematics, English, Chemistry, Physics and Biology), taught by tutors who know the current study designs and the VCAA marking, and it is exam-focused from Term 1: worked SAC-style questions, past VCAA papers from mid-year, examiner reports, and timed practice so the real exam holds no surprises.

Year 12 maths is Units 3 and 4 of Methods, General or Specialist, each with two exams. Methods covers functions and graphs, algebra, calculus (differentiation, anti-differentiation and applications) and probability and statistics, with Exam 1 by hand (no calculator, no notes) and Exam 2 with CAS and a bound reference. General covers data analysis, recursion and financial modelling, matrices, and networks and decision mathematics, with marks lost mostly on interpretation, rounding and calculator procedure. Specialist covers proof, complex numbers, vectors, calculus and differential equations, and statistical inference, alongside Methods. Our Year 12 maths tutors teach the subject to the current study design, drill Exam 1 hand skills weekly for Methods and Specialist, build the bound reference progressively, and move to full past-exam practice from mid-year.

Year 12 English is Units 3 and 4 of the current study design: analytical text response on the set texts, creating texts within the Framework of Ideas with a written explanation, and analysing argument, with a three-hour exam covering all three. The oral presentation is assessed during the year. Our VCE English tutors teach a method for each task, practise it on the school's actual set texts and SAC styles, and mark every piece to the VCAA criteria. Every session includes timed writing, because a three-hour exam rewards students who can plan and write quickly.

Year 12 sciences are Units 3 and 4 of Chemistry, Physics or Biology, each with a single end-of-year exam and SACs across the year including a student-designed investigation. Chemistry moves through energy (fuels, thermochemistry, electrochemistry, rates and equilibrium) and carbon-based compounds (organic chemistry, spectroscopy, medicinal chemistry). Physics covers fields, generators and transformers, mechanics and relativity, then light and matter. Biology covers nucleic acids, proteins and gene regulation, biochemical pathways, immunity, and genetic change and evolution. Our tutors teach to the current study designs with calculation drills, exam-style explanations marked to the VCAA criteria, and past exams with examiner reports from mid-year.

These are the topics our Year 12 tutors cover, by year level, drawn from the curriculum-aligned question banks that power the free Skills Check.
Year 12 sessions are an hour, subject-specific, one-to-one or in a small group of two to four at the same subject. Maths sessions run retrieval, the current area of study with worked examples, a hand-skills set for Exam 1 subjects, CAS technique, and a timed set marked in VCAA style; the bound reference is added to every week. English sessions are timed writing on the school's texts and tasks, marked to criteria and rewritten. Science sessions pair concept teaching with calculation drills and multi-mark explanation questions. From Term 3 every session includes past VCAA exam material and examiner-report feedback. Before each SAC the session becomes SAC preparation. A progress note follows every session.
Small groups of two to four at the same subject work well for Methods, General, Chemistry and Biology and are cheaper. One-to-one suits English, Specialist, Physics, students aiming for the top study scores, and any student who needs to recover from a poor SAC. Online is the most common Year 12 format because it saves travel time students do not have and lets us match Specialist and Physics students with genuinely strong tutors. The Truganina centre runs September-holiday exam blocks.
For Year 12, small groups (up to four students at the same level) are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $45 an hour. Across all year levels, small groups are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour, with VCE at the top of the range. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.
Here is a typical week for a Year 12 student doing two subjects with us. Most families run one session a week per subject; two a week is worth it in the term before NAPLAN, a scholarship or selective test, or the VCE exams.
Before or alongside tutoring, your child can try our free online practice quizzes for Year 12, built from the same curriculum-aligned question banks as the Skills Check. They are short, marked instantly, and a good way to see which topics need work.
The written examinations run from 27 October to 18 November 2026. The GAT is in June, and results (study scores and the ATAR) are released in December.
No. Many of our students join in Term 3 for exam preparation, and past-exam practice with examiner-report feedback in the last ten weeks makes a measurable difference. Earlier is better, because SACs count from Term 1, but later is still worth it.
Each subject's study score is built from school-assessed coursework (moderated against the exam) and the VCAA examination. The exact weighting varies by subject. Both matter; a strong exam can lift moderated SAC scores.
Yes. We start in Unit 3 and add to it weekly: worked examples, common errors, CAS shortcuts, in the student's own words and organised so a question type can be found in seconds.
Yes, from mid-year onwards, together with the examiner reports, which tell you exactly where most students lost marks and what the assessors wanted to see. Practice is timed and marked in the VCAA style.
Small groups from $25 an hour; one-to-one $45 an hour. The Skills Check and consultation are free, plans are monthly and there is no lock-in.
