Year 5 is a demanding year. The Victorian Curriculum expects a Year 5 student to work with numbers into the millions, to multiply and divide multi-digit numbers with written methods, to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator, to work with decimals and to meet percentages, to calculate perimeter and area using rules, to read 12- and 24-hour time, to measure angles, to express chance as a fraction and to interpret data. In English, the year is about depth: inferring an author's purpose, comparing texts, writing persuasive pieces with developed arguments, using complex sentences, and building the vocabulary that separates a strong writer from an average one.
Two milestones make Year 5 a pressure point. NAPLAN in March, which is the second time a child is benchmarked and the point at which parents usually look at the trajectory from Year 3. And scholarship tests: for families aiming at Year 7 entry to an independent or Catholic school, Year 5 is the main preparation year, with tests sat in the first half of Year 6 and pitched above year level in maths and reading, with reasoning sections and timed writing. Both reward the same thing: secure Year 5 skills plus the ability to read a question and think.

Year 5 maths is where written methods and number sense have to work together. Multiplying a three-digit number by a two-digit number, dividing with remainders, adding fractions with like denominators, converting between fractions, decimals and percentages, and applying area and perimeter rules all depend on the times tables being automatic and on the child understanding place value well enough to estimate whether an answer is reasonable. Our Year 5 sessions check those foundations first, then teach the year's methods with plenty of worked examples and a short mixed set every week so nothing is forgotten.

Year 5 English is about reading and writing with purpose. The Victorian Curriculum expects a Year 5 reader to identify an author's point of view and the techniques used to persuade or engage, to compare texts, and to make inferences across a whole text. Writing moves from structure to quality: persuasive pieces with a clear position, arguments developed with evidence, and a conclusion; narratives with a real complication; complex sentences; and vocabulary chosen for effect. Our tutors teach a short planning method for each genre and mark writing against the criteria a teacher (or NAPLAN) uses.

Year 5 science covers light, the adaptations of living things, solids, liquids and gases, and the Earth in the solar system. The assessment at most schools is a report or a presentation, so we treat the class science topic as an informative-writing task when a family asks, rather than running separate science sessions.

Year 5 sessions are an hour, one-to-one or in a small group of up to four at the same level. Maths hours open with a mixed warm-up of ten questions from earlier topics (retrieval practice), then the week's teaching point with worked examples, guided practice, and a short timed set to finish. English hours combine a passage with inference and vocabulary questions, a teaching point, and a piece of writing that is planned, written and marked in the session. Scholarship-preparation sessions add timed reasoning sets. A progress note follows every session.
Small groups of up to four are the most common format for Year 5 and work well for NAPLAN preparation, where the group practises the same skills and formats together. One-to-one suits scholarship preparation in the early months, students well behind or well ahead, and anxious students. Online is a good fit from Year 5 for both subjects, and many families run online sessions during the term and come into the Truganina centre for revision blocks before NAPLAN or a scholarship test.
For Year 5, small groups (up to four students at the same level) are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35 an hour. Across all year levels, small groups are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour, with VCE at the top of the range. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.
Here is a typical week for a Year 5 student doing two subjects with us. Most families run one session a week per subject; two a week is worth it in the term before NAPLAN, a scholarship or selective test, or the VCE exams.

Yes, it is the main preparation year for Year 7 entry. Most scholarship tests are sat in Term 1 or 2 of Year 6, so Year 5 gives two or three terms to cover maths and reading above year level, learn the reasoning question types and practise timed writing without cramming.
The content is Year 4 and 5 level (larger numbers, fractions and decimals, area and perimeter, more complex inference) and the test is adaptive, so it gets harder as a child answers correctly. Writing is more often persuasive at this level. We prepare by teaching the skills, then using NAPLAN-style questions to check.
For NAPLAN and scholarship tests, yes: both are timed. Slowness is usually a number-facts or a reading-the-question problem, and both are fixable. We build speed gradually with short timed sets.
We teach a plan (position, three arguments with evidence, rebuttal, conclusion), practise the language of persuasion, and mark every piece against the criteria so the child knows where the marks are. By February the practice is timed.
Yes, and it works well at this age for both subjects. A camera on the page lets the tutor see maths working; writing is done in a shared document and marked live.
