What Year 8 science covers

Year 8 science is the first year with a lot of content: cells and their organelles, body systems (digestive, respiratory, circulatory), elements, compounds and mixtures and the periodic table, physical and chemical change, forms and transfers of energy, and rocks and the rock cycle. Tests reward precise terms and structured explanations, and practical reports carry real marks. Our Year 8 science sessions follow the school's current unit, teach the concept with diagrams, then practise define, describe, explain and compare questions and data analysis, so the student learns to write what the marks require.

Because each Year 8 science topic is assessed once and then left behind, we keep a short retrieval set going across the year so that the Year 9 and 10 work, which builds on cells and chemistry, has something to build on.

For some families the defining event of Year 8 is the selective-entry exam, sat in June for Year 9 entry to Melbourne High, Mac.Robertson Girls', Nossal and Suzanne Cory (which is in Werribee and draws heavily from Melbourne's west). It tests reading, maths, verbal and numerical reasoning and writing, pitched above year level and under strict time. For everyone else, Year 8 is the year to make sure the algebra is genuinely understood, because Year 9 builds linear graphs, trigonometry and surds directly on it, and the year to keep a student engaged when the novelty of secondary school has worn off.

How we tutor Science (Years 7–10)

Junior secondary science is where students decide whether they are a science person or not, and that decision usually comes down to two things: whether they can read a question and work out what it is asking, and whether they can write a scientific explanation. Content knowledge matters, but Year 7 to 10 science tests reward the student who can use a term correctly, describe a trend on a graph and explain a result using the right concept.

Our science tutoring follows the four Victorian Curriculum content strands (biological, chemical, physical, and earth and space sciences) plus the science inquiry skills that run through all of them. Year 7 covers classification, mixtures and separation, forces and the Earth in space; Year 8 moves to cells, elements and compounds, energy and rocks; Year 9 brings body systems and homeostasis, atoms and chemical reactions, electricity and heat, plate tectonics; Year 10 tackles genetics and evolution, the periodic table and reaction types, motion and energy, and the universe. We teach the concept, then practise the explanation.

Because science moves through topics quickly and each topic is assessed once, we structure sessions around the school's current unit. A tutor will typically spend the first part of an hour on the concept the class is doing, using diagrams and worked explanations, then move to practice questions of the type that appear on the test: define, describe, explain, compare, and the data-analysis questions that most students lose marks on. Practical report writing (aim, hypothesis, variables, method, results, discussion) is taught explicitly, because it is rarely taught explicitly at school.

Year 10 science is particularly important for Melbourne's west, because it is the gate to VCE Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Students who enter Year 11 without confident mole calculations, unit conversions, or the habit of writing a full explanation find Units 1 and 2 a shock. Our Year 10 science sessions build those foundations on purpose, and our tutors will talk honestly with you about which VCE sciences suit your child.

Science is offered one-to-one or in small groups by year level, at the Truganina centre or online. Online works well for science because diagrams, simulations and shared documents are easy to use on screen. Every session ends with a progress note, and homework is usually a short set of exam-style questions rather than a worksheet.

How Year 8 sessions run

Year 8 sessions are an hour, one-to-one or in a small group of up to four at the same level. Maths hours run retrieval, teaching point, guided practice with the tutor watching setting out, then a short independent set. English hours produce a piece of analytical or persuasive writing on the school's task, marked live and partly rewritten. Science hours combine concept teaching on the current unit with exam-style questions and a practical report when one is due. Selective-entry sessions add timed reasoning and writing sets. A progress note follows every session.

Group or one-to-one for Year 8?

Small groups of up to four at the same level suit most Year 8 students for maths and science, and for selective-entry practice sets. One-to-one is better for English, for students who have disengaged and need to rebuild confidence, and for the first months of selective preparation. Online works well for all subjects at Year 8; many students prefer it, and families in the west use the Truganina centre for revision blocks and holiday programs.

Pricing for Year 8

For Year 8, small groups (up to four students at the same level) are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35–$40 an hour. Across all year levels, small groups are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour, with VCE at the top of the range. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.

Frequently asked questions

How do we prepare for the selective-entry exam in June?

Start as early in Year 7 or Year 8 as possible. The exam covers reading, maths, verbal and numerical reasoning and writing, pitched at Year 8 to 9 level, under time. We run a Skills Check and a reasoning diagnostic, then weekly sessions mixing above-level maths, reasoning sets and timed writing, and we are honest about how the student is tracking.

My child has stopped trying in Year 8. Is tutoring the answer?

Often, yes, because disengagement in Year 8 usually follows a run of tests that did not go well. A tutor who finds the gap, fixes it and shows the student they can do it tends to restore effort within a term. We start with the free Skills Check so the plan is specific.

Which parts of Year 8 maths matter most for Year 9 and 10?

Algebra: index laws, expanding, factorising and solving linear equations. Year 9 linear graphs, surds and trigonometry all assume them, and Year 10 quadratics assume Year 9. Setting out matters as much as the content.

Do you tutor all three sciences or just one?

All of them across Years 7 to 10, because junior science is integrated: each year contains biology, chemistry, physics and earth science units. In Years 11 and 12 we split into dedicated VCE Chemistry, Physics and Biology tutoring.

My child understands the topic but does badly on tests. Why?

Almost always it is the writing. Science tests award marks for specific terms and specific structures (cause, mechanism, effect). We teach students how to read the command word and how many marks a question is worth, then how to write exactly that much.

Can you help with the science practical report?

Yes. Reports and investigations are a big part of the Year 7 to 10 assessment and we teach the structure, how to identify variables, how to draw and describe a graph, and how to write a discussion that actually evaluates the method.
